I have a Ransomes Bobcat T-3100 that does the trick for me now. Bought it used...60" deck. Cut my mowing time down from almost 6 hours to a little over 4 hours.

I've got a 60" deck for the Ford tractor...but I've never used it.
 
Drive by the Walker Manufacturing plant quite often. Very good machines, made right here in river city...

Appreciate all the comments. But, all I need is a 21- or 22-inch push mower. My yard isn't that big.

Found a Lawn Boy with a Tecumseh, but $400+? I know they're good quality, but that's a bit much.

As for getting what you pay for, that mower I bought from Montgomery Ward was a plain-Jane, bottom-of-the-line model, and it outlasted anything I've ever had. Probably still running!

Still looking...
 
I guess it all depends on what you want to do with it when not mowing lawns....

Mickey, the quality that you had with that old Montgomery Ward unit it really a thing of the past. Nowadays, an inexpensive mower will be a temporary fix. Always buy the best that you can, Lawn Boy is a good brand (owned by Toro) and should last you indefinitely with proper maintenance, rather like an LBC. The cheap brands are merely throwaway items these days.
 
I'm sure you're right, and maybe I got lucky before.

However, the mower is not much more than the engine, and as long as it's looked after, about the only things that would need replacing would be the blade and the wheels.

Interesting that Tecumsehs only seem to be offered on the "high-end" models now...
 
The engine is often the best part of an inexpensive mower these days. The decks are crap...and without a deck...you may as well buy some sheep!

which would be ok too as you could have the manure for your rhubarb, although I prefer custard on mine :thumbsup:

Mickey, you're in the same boat as me. We have a modest sized lot at our summer house (1/2 acre) and a 20" push mower does fine (and we have a lot of rock outcroppings, so a rider-mower wouldn't be so good anyway).

About 15 years ago, I bought a cheap push mower for $99. Last year, I replaced it with ~This One~ for about $119. I guess that's inflation!
(by the way, it works fine)

That, indeed, would be perfect... if it had the Tecumseh engine! (I know, I'm obsessing here!)

That's pretty much what my old one was. Plus, it had a cast aluminum deck - no rust!

Oh well, planned obsolescence strikes once again!
 
Oh, and mowing the lawn is part of my exercise "regimen", so no self-propelled or rider for me!
 
Whats does Lawnboy use? I have a Lawnboy I bought used for $75 and the thing lasted 25 years!
 
Well Mickey, if you decide to go with a rider at some point. You might put this one on your list. Don't have to worry about blades going dull.
