Lawn Mowers

OK, here's one that's fit for the Pub:

I've been looking for a mower with a Tecumseh engine, and haven't had any luck. Why Tecumseh? I've had much better luck with them than the B&S models. The best one I ever had was bought from Montgomery Ward (remember them?) sometime back in the seventies. Gave it away when I went to seminary in '90, and it was still going strong. Bought another one several years ago from Sears, but it was stolen.

Found a few online, but in Canada. Are they still being sold here? Everything is either B&S or Honda, it seems.

Never had a Tecumseh. But after years of B&S I finally bought a Honda mower.

Love it!

I think that you can get a Tecumseh on an Ariens.

You are right, they are better engines than the B&S. I used to sell power equipment, and I have to say that the Hondas are without a doubt the best machines out there. Made in Marysville Ohio, as is all of Honda's power equipment, so they keep jobs in America if you buy one. Not the cheapest, but the best.

Ariens use engines from Honda, Kawasaki, or Kohler (another excellent engine).

Honda are excellent in terms of reliability and noise, Kohler I am not a big fan of as I put a rod through the block on a rider i had and it was idling at the time, musta had a problem anyway.

I've got Sears rider with a 42" deck from the late '70's with a Tecumseh engine that's still going strong. Only had to rebuild the carb last season.

Love my zero turn Husquavarna mower - take it in for service once a year & run the hck out of it during the season! It finally went out of warranty last year (I've owned it about 4 years)

I had a B&S on my Craftsman mower, and it seemed to need frequent carb cleaning. Got a Tecumseh on my snow blower, and that thing has been reliable as a hammer. Always starts on the first pull, and I haven't had to do a thing to it other than a new spark plug and oil change each season.

One thing to keep in mind, especialy for the nothern states where winters are cold and snowy, Anything with any kind of internal combustion engine that is going to be in storage for the winter months needs to have the fuel stabilised. Just like you would add stabiliser to your Motorhome for winter storage.

As far as the gas engines go for mowers and the like, It`s pretty hard to beat a Honda. Tecumseh is a good engine but trying to find parts localy {ignition parts filters and gaskets and the like}, is nearly impossible {at least here}.
B&S engines are "Disposable" I.M.H.O. Meant to be tossed when dead. Just my opinion tho.
These engines have the anodised aluminum cylinder wall { Like the old chev vega had.} Once scratched there trash. Unless you are willing to spend $ to have them sleeved with steel.

I have a Torro mower - 6(?) years old, that has a 6.5HP Tecumseh engine. Has run pretty faultlessly for me, even after being left out only partly covered during the New England winters. Parts are no problem - have a Torro dealer near by.

Rob.

first time I checked Mickey it gave me a list of about 5 dealers in the Clarksville area and now nothing. Wierd

My lawn mowers name is Pedro!!

Does he have papers?

I am partial to Kawasaki engines, as in my John Deere mower.

Did you know that all medium and smaller John Deere tractors are Isuzu, and anything 40hp and below in a Mercury outboard is a Yamaha.

Wait until you have to buy a starter for one. $$$$$$$$$
As far a Tecumseh go, I wouldn't have one. Nothing but trouble IMHO. Carbs fill up with crud and NEVER run right again. I prefer B&S to Tecumseh but everyone is right about the Honda engine. Can't kill em.

Nothing runs like a DEER! Or so they say.

I ran a commercial mowing service for about 12/13 years.

First, you get what you pay for.

Second, Briggs moved it's engine plant to Mexico, (need I say more?)

A Kawaski on a Deere is the best combo you can get, IF you don't buy "consumer grade product" and go commercial. Deer's "sabre" products sold by Lowe's are actually made under license by MTD in TN, I believe and are junk. I still have a F-935, 285 and a 345. Both of the later two are L&G belley mount tractors with liquid cooled, twin V's with full pressure lubrication and hydrostatic drive. The 935 is a Yanmar 3 cylinder deisel with hydrostat with cruise control and power steering.

And finally, don't drink and mow....

I've got 2 Toros -- a new lawn mower and a 20+ year old snowblower. The snowblower still works just fine, chugging along.

No idea what the motors are, but they work...
