I installed my bonnet/hood release mechanism today.
Looks like this:

Before this install, as an early TR owner, the hood release
failed and I had to drill into the firewall (bulkhead) in order to disengage the latch mechanism on the hood. An
experience I'll never forget.

I want to thank the Forum members generally; and
Dale, (Tinster), specifically for posting the following
great pictures in order to assist me with my purchase
and/or install. The pictres that aided install are as
follows:

I show you my valve cover, only because I have to
tell you that I backed off screwing the three valve cover
long threaded studs counter-clock-wise until approximately
a half-in of threads were showing at the bottom where they
screw into the head/block. This was to accommodate the
hardware necessary to install my Justin Wagner vavle cover
gasket.

Is my workbench a good place for the hood release to be?

Sail,

It will be fine there until the cable breaks and the hood doesn't open. At that point in time, it will seem like a bad place for it.

Especially on a Saturday morning, right before a 500 mile weekend begins.

I assume that you know exactly why I can that with confidence.

Or until a very courteous person decided that your hood should be pushed down in the lock position while you are in Home Depot right after the hood release cable breaks :wall:
 
experience speaks. actually i have a legnth of picture hanger wire sticking in the hood gap just in case. winter project.

Wait - I thought the workbench was where it was supposed to be installed. Bugger - that is where mine is too. Maybe reading the directions is a good idea after all....

ya out a bit.

Now a bit of advice.

My brand new cable release almost never functions.
My emergency release fails maybe 1 in 20 attempts.

I added a third failsafe backup, as seen in the photo.
And yes it might seem overkill.

And yes, I've had to use it several times and I'm mighty
glad it was there. I access it from the passenger footwell;
up behind the glove box.

Dale- I think your hood release needs adjusting if it fails that often.

Don, it never worked very well so I gutted all of Pedro's
worn out junk and installed new everything- cable, both latch
pieces, etc. I think it's just a bad design.

Have you adjusted it yet? You can't just bolt it up and expect it to be perfect. There is an adjustment side to side ,forward and back for the catch. It is easy to do ,especially if you follow a procedure I copied from a Wedge owner. There is also a bonnet up down adjustment too.

Nice set up,seems that there is a rubber grommet missing around the wires that go through the bulkhead below the catch should be there to stop the wires from chaffing(possibly earthing out eventually) and to seal the hole from water and muck entering - just one of those niggly little things

I'm using the same fisherman's solution you have, just a different attachment point. I like it because it was something I had in the tackle box, it didn't need any drilling, and it actually worked when the emergency came up.

Looks great, but you know you don't need to be messin with that emergency cable if you decide to just drive around for a while without the bonnet! Just turn the key, fire that puppy up, and go!

I want to say the job took 45 minutes. That includes preparation and clean up. I'd save the bigger jobs for winter. I've had hood release problems(fortunately no breaking) and they are not fun to deal with.

I can't remember the last time I pulled the standard release. This one is so much more convenient since the car is set more for right hand drive when it comes to opening the bonnet.
