TR4/4A Late TR4A - Anyone know what this is ???

I have a late number TR4A and this car has an unusual bracket on the rear of the gear box immediately forward of the rear drive shaft seal and bearings.

1) Some form of a counterweight immediately rear of aft gearbox mount
2) There appears to be a switch of some form that detects REVERSE.
3) This was taken apart to replace the aft gearbox support bracket

Not sure if previous owner (original owner) installed this.

Not a TR4 guy yet :smile: but I think I know...

Looks like a vibration dampener that was fitted to reduce a vibration that occurred between 2700-3000 rpm.

Is it possible you have a TR3 gearbox that didn't have a provision for back up lights. Looks like that might be someone creative solution....

The weight is factory. I don't have my SPC handy, but I've seen it in there, and I've got one just like it in my parts bin.

The switch appears to be a DPO-ism.
 
I removed such a weight/ dampener from a solid axle TR4A. But have never seen one on any other TR.

Weight is suppose to help reduce vibration. Throw it away. Second picture whats left of rear trans mount. Throw it away. Third picture looks like PO was trying to do his own version of back up light. Throw it away. Last picture I can't tell much about it. Is it another picture of third picture? Throw it away LOL

Pic 1 is a vibration damper weight.
Pic 2 is whats left of rear transmission mount damper.
Pic 3 was a switch detect when reverse was engaged - was not wired up to anything.
Pic 4 was switch installed.

Keeping the damper weight for now.
Switch and mounting hardware was removed ... I will ask DPO (dumbass previous owner ?)
The rear transmission mount was replaced - it was just cumbling in place.

Tush - there does not appear to be a provision for reverse lights on my trans.
However this is a late 67 TR4A purchased in US but delivered in UK as a LHD with export cert.

So the TR4/A transmissions as identical to the TR3 ?
This is the OEM transmission.

This car CTC77927LO.
