So do any of you computer gurus think Carla would be happy with a Toshiba L955-S5370 for use in college?? Staples has this one on sale at $500.00. Intel dual core i5, 640GB HD, Windows 8, wireless netwok, etc. Thanks.
 
I suspect she would be delighted. Does itcome with Word?
 
I don't think you can go wrong.
Note, however, that Win8 will require some getting used to. It will allow one to sort-of swipe the touch-pad (in ways that almost like an iPhone or iPod Touch).

The Toshiba I have has been pretty much bullet-proof for a couple years now. And I've heard similar comments from others.
 
Thanks ya'll. Sounds like it's OK. No JP, it doesn't come with Word but MS has a really good deal for college students. The whole Office Suite is only $100.00.
 
Oh yeah...one more question since this will be our first laptop. It has wireless comm so Carla can use it at school. What about here at home? Specs say 'no modem port' but it does have 10/100 ethernet. What does all of this mean and can we hook it into the home system somehow? Will we need to buy some sort of wireless system for home? We're pretty ignorant on this part...
 
Modems (with rj11 connectors) have pretty much gone the way of the serial port and the floppy drive. If you have cable or DSL you can attach a hub to that modem (high speed) and plug all the computers into that hub via the ethernet jacks on the computers. A wireless hub usually has eternet jacks so you get the added benefit of wired and wireless. The hub I have also sports a USB connector. I have a thumb drive attached to it so I can transfer files to other computers on the network without having both machines on at the same time.

Yes the specs say it has a 10/100 port. You can also see it in the pics on the right hand side. This will let you run a cable to it. +1 on choosing a laptop with a number pad.

I have a Satellite L755 for a year and a half now and it has been a great computer. I use it daily, and no longer even use my old desk top.
