Front-engine, rear wheel-drive sedan.
Close relative of the FIAT 124 sedan (which I used to own).
The FIAT version handled nice and had 4 wheel disk brakes (but I wouldn't be surprised if the Lada had rear drums). But miserable, recirculating-ball steering box (just like the 124 Spider). I believe the Lada used the same pushrod engine as the FIAT 124 sedan but there may be a newer single-cam engine in them(they don't use the twin-cam seen in other 124s).
These cars share <span style="text-decoration: underline">no</span> parts with another eastern bloc car, the Yugo (which is based on the front wheel-drive FIAT 128).
They still build these rwd Ladas in Egypt and Russia.

I used to know the guy who operated the nationwide Lada franchise in Canada back in the 1980's... He thought that the Signet was a very good vehicle and quite reliable, but that the biggest mistake they made was to bring in the Samara which was a lemon and gave Lada a bad reputation, by that point he was no longer involved in the company...
And the Niva 4x4? They have an avid following here in Canada, apparently very rugged little trucks, a very harsh road ride but then again they were designed as a 4x4 first and they do that job well...
