Knocking in transmission

Just curious. What does it involve for the swap? Do they make a kit to match the bell housing and the shift linkage?

Here's one of the popular options for the Supra 5-speed. I have one in my TR3, and I really like it. It uses the original shift lever in it's original position. I bought a Toyota trans for $150 from ebay plus $50 shipping.

There's another guy out there that cuts the bell housing off a TR box and does something so it mates up to the Toyota, but I don't know much about that one. It also costs less then Herman's conversion.

Why in the name of sin would you not get the supra tranny and install it NOW??? Rather than throwing good money
into a box that has little to be said for it??
If you have a nice OD box and worship the coventry gods, you might want to restore it. But if you dont why not
make the car better than new????? I have never heard of anyone regretting the silky shifting of a toyota 5 speed.wishing for the clunks and
whines of their old english lump....
MD

So many question marks haha! This is my first TR4, MD. I didn't know about the supra tranny. That's why this forum exists, no? In any case, it's too late now. I'm heading to KC to pick it up today. But I'd be grateful if you could answer a few of your questions for us and enlighten me as to the total cost or where to buy the kit, etc. so that when the Coventry gods smite me, I might find the enlightened path to the Supra.

That does sound great! Unfortunately, it's about $1,000 more than this rebuilt one. I realize that's not that much in the grand scheme of things, but that is a lot to me right now. And besides, shouldn't a rebuilt last me quite a long while? It's actually a TR6 gearbox with the thicker flange, too. But no, not OD.

Let me guess : You've never flipped an overdrive switch at about 4500 rpm full throttle in 2nd gear. Nor seen the eyes of the guy next to you driving the Toyota/Triumph hybrid as his engine bogs down in 3rd gear while your front end pops up and you suddenly gain about a half length.

Or floored the throttle and flipped the OD switch as you pull out to pass.

Besides, if I wanted to drive a Toyota (shudder), I'd buy one!

Those clunks and whines are from the rear end in my car (and will hopefully go away when I get an axle built to replace it). Although it might not shift quite as smoothly as a Toyota, my 7-speed semi-automatic is quiet and solid. I can't imagine wanting to trade it for a 5 speed manual ... unless maybe I was also swapping the entire driveline and frame for something more modern ... but would the result still be a Triumph?

If its any consolation, Scott, you made the choice I would have. I spend the first 20 years modifying cars, but once they turn classic I try to return them to original. Oh...probably best not to tell them what came out of their core!?!

Ha thanks, John! They knew my gearbox was in pretty bad shape but since they didn't have to mess with eBay or shipping and all that, I still got a pretty good deal. Nice folks.
I had opened the old one up out of curiosity before bringing it in: from just the surface, it looked like the layshaft bearing broke up and messed up the main shaft pretty bad. That gear was missing teeth, chipped, and catching on the layshaft. The other gears didn't look too bad but I know 2nd was giving me trouble plus the synchros probably needed changing. All that and the cracked flange...glad to get rid of it!
