Knob Installation/Removal

I need to install two knobs on my dash but I cant get them into the holes without taking the black plastic part of the knob off. It looks like theres a small hole underneath, and a small wedge area behind it, but Ive poked and pried, and cant seem to get it off. Any ideas on how to remove them?

They can be very hard to get off sometimes. It seems to help if you can find a way to pry against both sides at the same time (so the knob is being forced off straight instead of at an angle).
