At the end of August I was talking of some knee pain I had. Well after several appointments, Xrays, MRI's more xrays and a 2nd opinion, yours truly sprained his knee, ACL issues, lateral colateral blah blah blah & tore my miniscus. I started PT tonight and will be going 2 nights a week until my surgery on Nov 9th. Then more PT. Anybody have this done and if so, how'd it go and what do I have to look forward to?

Don't know about knee but I'm doing PT on my own for my shoulder...go back to doctor on 18th - if its 'limber' enough, they operate...if not, I go to 'formal' PT. It is limbering up...when I started, I couldn't do 3 repititions of the exercises, now I'm up to 80 reps of each! And a real hot shower after to relax it.

can't tell you bout knee surgery, but the shoulder will take a year to be fully the same if it ever gets there

vping, i had the same operation on my r/knee 1990-1991, as a result of a ski accident, was great until about 9 months ago when it got "pesky" throbbing ache, went back got m.r.i, xray etc, was told i didnt have any additional damage but had fluid on/around the knee the doc walked into the room with my favorite thing in the world (no not a renewal prescription for percocet and a beer) but a huge horse needle, he turned around to prep it and i was gone, hed told me earlier during the exam that ones body usually absorbs the fluid as you know its been cool and raining the last couple of days and this knee is bothering me as i type, i wasnt told to do p.t. prior to the operation but can tell you "you must and should" do the p.t. after, i think youll find that after your operation you want to move your sleeping, t.v. area, eating area as close to the little boys room as possible, i.e. some place you wont have to go up/down stairs, because getting there will become a sporting event, crutches can be dangerous if you can practice with them in advance, again do the p.t.! and good luck. - side note i had my knee done in ct. by dr. "sorry" yep that was his name. tony b. good luck with your shoulder. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/savewave.gif

did you tear the ACL? My youngest had both his acl's reconstructed 1 4 years ago and 1 2 years ago they used the patellar tendon for the one knee repair and the hamstring for the other. He was on crutches for about 3-4 weeks after with both them. He plays soccer so fitness and leg strength were no problem. However my older son also had one of his repaired using the hamstring and he milked the crutches for about 3 mths. He did a lot of mountain biking and is also fit, so I think it depends on the individual. Myself I just had a knee replacement done June 26th and was on crutches for about 5 weeks. My personal feeling is that a knee replacement is easier than ACL work. Good luck with it whatever you get done. And you with your shoulder Tony

Oh joy.

Vinnie:

I have been prolonging knee surgery for over twenty years, (fractured them both). There are some bad days, but as long as I can walk, it okay. I am hoping to get a few more years until they need replacement.

A friend of mine at 58, just had the knee joint and knee cap surgeries done. They straightened and lengthened the injured leg. He had minimal PT and is doing well. According to him, not that painful. Pretty routine stuff these days.

My Mom just had a knee replacement. she is 60 something (she will hunt me down and put a Bat up me nightdress if i tell her real age). She did her PT both before and after the surgery, She was up and about after about 3 days and says it was the best thing she has ever done.

Vinnie,

All I had was two tears of the meniscus, both inner and outer.

They went in arthoscopically and the surgery lasted about an hour and a half. Knee was sore for a couple of days, stiff for a couple of weeks. The PT did help a lot for regaining movement and flexibility. I do also recommend one of the good chondroitin/glucosamine/msm dietary supplements.

Now about four months after the surgery the knee/leg is better than it's been for about 6 years. Get the JOB DONE!

Co-inkydentally me mum calls me up right after I hurt my knee and says "I tore my miniscus and I have to have surgery" We are going in about the same time.
