I use all the usual safety stuff: I have presciption safety glasses (bi-focal, in fact) as well as ear muffs for using louder power tools.
But one of the most useful "shop-work" items I've used in the last few years are inexpensive knee pads. On work days, I put them on in the morning and keep them on all day...even with shorts (actually, especially with shorts). I bought mine at a local hardware store and I'm sure they are available at many larger department stores. You will be able to work longer and more comfortably and with less aches and pains.
