I bought a set of shallow sockets a while back at a garage sale called Klamp Klaw. A 4 pc. set, 7/16-5/8, they were made by Paramount Products Co. in Los Angeles.
They appear to be a standard socket set but inside have two pieces of spring steel forming the hex, bridged by threaded rod holding them in place. The socket grips the fastener as you get it into position. Once in place, I replace it with a standard socket for torquing. Same idea as a blob of grease, but a lot less messy.
I have looked, but have never found another set. They are very convenient. I figure they're from the 40' or 50's since they were manufactured in L.A..
Any one familiar with them?
