King pin/Swivel axle

Well I managed to get everything apart on the front end so I could change the bushes. Here is a picture of the kingpin/swivel axle. Can I soak the whole thing in varsol? I can't get grease through the upper zert.(the nipple is clear). Can I take the trunion off and clean out old grease without having to know any specific settings? If so what parts are inside that I need to replace?

Unless you're planning on replacing the king pins themselves, bout all you'll need to do is take them apart, clean & regrease.....however, that bolt on the upper trunnion probably won't come off

So, about all you can do then is clean - but don't dunk them in anything!
 
This reminds me... I need to get a grease gun and spend some time under all my cars.
 
Tony, if you don't dunk 'em, what do you recommend for cleaning around the front suspension? Something nice on rubber, I'll bet, all massaged in wih a wire brush & cloth?
 
I scrape mine as best as I can...then, I brush/spary on cleaner & wipe off until they're clean...think that spacer inside the center of the stub axle that protects the king pin is plastic.
 
Whaddya mean spray on 'cleaner'? Are we talking spray-on degreaser or moisturising beauty soap? I'm going to try diesel - it's cheap and 'sticks' a bit.
 
Once you scrape them pretty clean, most everything will be gone...then I brush on plain old parts cleaner & scrape some more...I usually end up with carb cleaner

But, diesle will work also

Make sure you air dry them real good
 
Thanks guys. Tony I don't plan on replacing them. They swivel so I guess they work OK. I need to get grease to the top nipple. You mention about taking them apart. Exactly how do you mean? And when you mention trunion bolt do you mean castle nut?
