How do you tell if you have too much shim? CAN you have too much? Will it affect the steering feel?

add shims until the swivel axle is snug verticaly and turns with slight resistance when the king pin nut is torqued to the proper value. If you put in too much shim then the swivel axle can move verticaly and thats not good. Makes for all kinds of banging sounds.......
