I have enough trouble reading posts on forums. Give me a REAL book with pages any day! Don't understand the appeal of virtual reading.

But seriously Mickey... foxtrapper pretty much said it. The readers and ebooks don't <span style="font-style: italic">replace</span> regular books - at least not for most of us. They <span style="font-style: italic">do</span> provide a practical alternative though.

I got interested when I buying books to take on a trip recently. Then it hit me that instead of carrying a couple of heavy books with me I could just carry a 1/2-pound kindle <span style="font-style: italic">and</span> buy other books on it if I wanted to.

I've culled my <span style="font-style: italic">real</span> book collection to mostly just my hard-backs and a few computer books. I'm down to two full book shelves... but from now on I plan on buying ebooks instead of paperbacks. No more finding a place to put the book, no more clutter, and I'll always have the book's content.

Other <span style="font-style: italic">practical</span> use is for some textbooks. Have you seen some of the computer language books out there? We're talking 4-5" books sometimes. They're huge and heavy, the Kindle version is still 8oz...not to mention you can use the search function to find what you need in the text, and clip parts you need to reference later.

Like I said - they don't <span style="font-style: italic">replace</span> real books but they are an easy to read, good alternative.

I now know that Barnes & Noble has a "nook" version....what else is out there?

I now know that Kindle is pretty much married to Amazon and excludes other sources of e-material...what about the others?

I usually procrastinate on christmas gifts util just before the holiday, as I find the limited selections on the shelf make my shopping much easier. In this case, though, i think it is prudent to do my homework early!

I'm with you Mickey..I still like actual books...have a library idea for an unusuable area of the house...

But even the military is going "e-book"..my aunt worked on a project that converted Navy Tech manuals to electronic format...and now my Army TM's are being moved to electronic format.

You need to do some researching. Google is your friend. Just google "ereader" and such.

I agree whole heartily with you Mickey as to reading a hard copy, but while traveling, these new compact electronic readers really are quite an asset. JMHO. PJ
