Son Paul used to come home from school and say, "DAD! I heard this great song today." And he'd proceed to sing a line to me.

I'd say, "Oh, yeah - that's "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" by Crosby, Stills and Nash (or whatever); then say: "YOU'RE WELCOME - MY music!"

Back when my daughter was in high school, she came to me and said she had to do a report on an influential musician...but nothing classical please...I threw out the name of Charlie Parker. She did the report, got an A, and said to me, "hey, that guy's pretty good!" :laugh:
 
When my wife and I were young (quite a long time ago), her parents would say they liked a song heard on the radio, and were nonplussed to find out that it was a Beatles song. Fast forward 20 years, and our kids would say they liked some song they'd just heard, and were nonplussed to find out that it was a Beatles song.

Go figure.

that was the band Paul McCartney used to be in right? I've heard of them (I think).
 
Growin up, my dad was a musician (still is somewhat) so I teethed on everything from the Beatles and Stones to Alabama and John Denver. But I still keep finding more musicians that slipped under my radar while growing up. I enjoy Classic rock, blues, ragtime, classic country, bluegrass,jazz, classical, christian (both traditional and contemporary) folk and comedy. Many of my favorite discoveries have been in the last two. Guys like Woodie and Arlo Guthrie, John Prine, Bobby Bare... Some huge names, some obscure...They just weren't the guys my parents listened to, so I never got to hear them. Never stop listening to new things. there's so much to be discovered. Encourage your kids to look past the top 20 station and find out that pop music ain't everything.
Someday my dot is gonna get me with one of those...
