Kentucky Snapping Turtles

Just a word to the wise...DON'T straddle one of these in the road when you're going 50 mph in an MGB !!! They are so large that they rip your exhaust system completely off. Had nowhere else to go with a narrow road, a guy on my tail and oncoming cars too close for me to swerve. Felt like it lifted the backend off the ground and felt like I'd hit an IED !!

Well, if it's any consolation, Gary, you sure ruined the turtle's day!

PETA's been notified - agents will be knocking on your door!
On a serious note - I hate it when things like that happen.

I thought the expression was "From Soup to Nuts" but in your case the reverse seems more appropriate!!

Similar incident trashed the frame on the Elan. Not a turtle tho. The BIG piece of steel that is put on the rear of 18-wheelers to keep a car from going underneath it was lying in MY lane of an eight lane Interstate section... traffic on both sides, no choice but to pucker up and run over it. The result could have been ~much~ worse, it cleaned off the exhaust and snapped the lower piece of the frame at the diff nearly in two. But I was able to keep control and get off the main highway. VERY lucky.

Scary stuff, Gary. Glad it wasn't worse.

Bringing Tony's GT home on my trailer last summer; driving in the middle lane on I-65 in the middle of Nashville. Lots of traffic, and moving at a pretty good pace. Rounding a bend, the car in front of me swerves and I spot a huge piece of bodywork - you know, that wonderful plastic thingy that makes up a front bumper, quarter panels, hood, roof, of a Saturn or some other jelly bean. (Well, maybe not the hood and roof...)

Absolutely nowhere to go, but I did manage to move left a bit. The right rear tire of my Tacoma clips the flotsam and luckily flips it away from me and the trailer. I had visions of that thing hitting my new toy! Pucker factor: 10!

And on a recent trip, I managed to avoid a recliner in the middle of my lane. Guy behind me appeared to hit it on purpose.
