TR2/3/3A K&N Carb TR-3B

Hi,

I've been talking with K&N about getting a set of their chrome filters my my TR-3B. They advised the part # is 56-1390. I also had them send me a diagram of the holes in the K&N. I just cut out the template and discovered the mounting holes are not properly spaced as they are not spaced far enough apart.

Any suggestions from the group?

Thanks.

Paul

I bought K & N filters from TSI that fit just fine. I don't know what the part # is, but Ted at TSI sells Triumph parts. Whatever he has fits.

Hi Paul,
That part # is for a 1½" SU. HERE is a list of their SU applications (scroll down a bit). Maybe the 56-9327 is what you want?

Greg,

Thanks. I may be measuring my carb wrong. The opening under the air filter for the air to the carb measures slightly over 1 1/2 inches--but not 1 3/4.

I'm assuming that means it is 1 1/2 vice 1 3/4.

Am I doing things wrong?
Paul

I run K&N p/n SD4-318 that I purchased from Ted tsimportedautomotive.com . They are 1-3/4" tall and have a center hole (not offset) they fit without problems but the front filter is close enough to have to tip in the cover to install it.

also avail from aptfast.com and others

Hi Paul,
As Don mentioned, the file you printed out might not be to scale. You should double check that your printer software isn't scaling the document. What carbs do you have, HD6s? Sorry I'm not up on Triumphs to know that. Been over 20 years since I had one.

On my TR3A, I'm using K&N 56-1400 filters, which are the large tuna can style.

I think the beveled type now available at MOSS look better, myself.....

I have the ones like Kevin in the top picture...Kevin, when was the last time you changed your motor mounts...I have a lot more clearance, I suspect yours have collapsed some.

Jeez, I hope not! New motor mounts about 3 years ago, which is when I got the K&Ns. The front filter was tight (close) then, I think it's about the same 3 years hence. Thanks for looking out for me, though!

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your asistance. I think I'm all set now.

I do have one question and that is how are the tapered Moss types attached with only one bolt?

Thanks again.

Paul

The back plate bolts to the carb. Then the top plate is fixed to the back plate. It's that way on the pancake style with the two nuts too.

Peter,

I just received my K&N air filters from K&N (56-1400). All holes look like they match the carb. The one issue is they did not come with bolts. I called K&N and they suggested I buy 1/4" bolts about 2 1/2 inches long.

I called the local Harley dealer and he has 1/4" bolts with chrome heads.

It appears I will have to mount the air filter to the carb, put the bolts in from the top, and then put the nuts and washers on the bottom of the carb.

No gasket came with the filters.

Is the gasket needed? Did you mount yours in the same way?

Thanks.

Paul

PS I also just received my braided hoses from Minimania and they look great. Looks like I have a busy weekend ahead of me

No need for chrome since they bolts aren't visable. I think that they're 5/16" bolts, you'll have to measure for length.

You're correct: bolts go through the K&N bottom plate, through the intake, then lock nuts and washers. Next the filter then the chrome covers and attach with the 5/16" acorn nuts.

Front cover on mine tips in from the bottom to top.

No gasket needed.
