Justification for all the hard work....

71tr,
Good to hear from you! Hope all is well! Yes I am using the HVDA hydraulic clutch. I love it.. now that I'm used to it. It catches at the top of the pedal instead of at the bottom like most TR's do. But the feel is very very positive; just like a modern car. Which reminds me, I've got a nice used Gunst bearing with 2000 miles on it if anyone wants to make me an offer.

Shawn,
I'm going to be testing new positions for the mic tomorrow. The camera is a Sony pen camera maybe about an inch in diameter. It has a capacity of 520 line capacity, which is better than my Canon digital camera by 20 lines.

Paul,
The two resonators are Flowmaster Hushpower II (pn: 12012300). I found the best price on eBay. All 304 stainless, very nice pieces. 12" long and 2" IN/OUT. Those two rear mufflers just didn't keep the sound down enough. The resonators fit real nice directly out of the tunnel. Let me know if you need anything else.

Uhh...Shannon??

Are you going to post the specs to that great looking exhaust?

Ok, here goes;

All in all, my exhaust went through four different iterations before I settled on this design. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask them.

I basically set out to build a stainless version of the Ansa exhaust. At one time last year I heard that Stebro (in Canada) was still making them and indeed they did sell me a copy. Unfortunately, they took my money but never shipped me anything after 4 months. I ended up getting my bank to reverse the charges. I don't recommend anyone buying from that company.

I then decided to fabricate my own setup with the following requirements:
1. it had to be 100% stainless
2. it had to be removable
3. it had to clear my sway bar (Goodparts)
4. it had to have a nice (not overly obnoxious) sound

I started with purchasing 4, 2"x10" long polished tips and 2, 18" long "mega-oval mufflers" from Stainless Specialties (https://www.stainless-specialties.com). I also bought a bunch of 2" stainless pipe from them as well.

I lucked out to find a great exhaust guy nearby that would work with all my insane notions and using pictures of Ansa, and old Stebro exhausts he fabricated this:

This had EXACTLY the look I was after, but it had two big problems:
1. It was unbearably loud. I mean window rattling loud. Those little mufflers just couldn't keep it quiet enough.
2. The clamps that my exhaust guy used to bolt it up together, made it so the center pipes could not be removed from the driveshaft tunnel without cutting them off.

I solved the noise problem by adding two 12" resonators between rear exit of the driveshaft tunnel and angling up to the main mufflers (sorry no pic of this just yet). The resonators were difficult to find that small and in stainless, but I finally settled on a Flowmaster Hushpower II (pn: 12012300). They fit in just perfectly:

The pipe removal problem was solved by using some v-band clamps from Burns Stainless (www.burnsstainless.com). I can have the complete system removed in 5 minutes and reinstalled in 15 minutes. These clamps are absolutely fantastic.

To answer other questions:
1. Is he crazy? Yes I am. However, I had a very specific look and sound that I was after.
2. How much did this cost?

<ul>[*]2, Mega oval mufflers 18" long - $169 each
[*]2, Flowmaster Resonators - $115 each
[*]4, Burns Stainless v-band clamps - $85 each
[*]18, linear feet of 2" 304, 14 guage stainless pipe - $198
[*]1, Installation and mounting hardware - $250
[/list]

I realize that this was an expensive proposition, but I paid for most of it by selling spare parts, so i didn't see much of the cost come directly out of my pocket. However if someone wanted something similar, eliminating the v-band clamps and using aluminized steel would still give you a system that would last for 10 years or more while being resonable as far as cost goes.

I just went with the "old" Monza. It's not like a 71 Spit would be high performance anyway, I guess. It just makes me smile to hear the purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Those Stebro guys are in the same city as me (more or less) I talked to them about three years ago. A friend of mine had a TR3 exhaust made up by them. Though they used his old system as a template and as he tell it they kept it on a board for reference in future builds.

My TR4A has a Stebro exhaust that looks a lot like what you have on your TR6 (though mine has a single resonator that has two inputs and two outputs, also the mufflers are a bit farther apart). The one I have was purchased decades ago and never installed until I used it three years ago. WHich brings me back to the Stebro (Canada folds). I called them about then and asked if they still made them and they told me they did not have a template for the TR4A. They were very keen to take a look at mine and copy the design (well it was theirs to begin with) I intended to let them in exchange for some barter regarding my TR3A exhaust. I never got around to it. I might have a chat with them about what you went through though. Did you ever talk to them or only deal with them via the web?

71tr... yeah I know. I'm a little nutty about some things.

Adrio,

I dealt with a guy named Dan Petschenig at Stebro. Like I said, he took my money, telling me that the system would be shipped in 2 weeks... four months later, after countless emails and phone calls resulting in at least a dozen excuses like: "it's going out tomorrow" and "it's stuck in customs" I got fed up and had the charges reversed. He even went so far as to send the shipping information to the shipper (twice) only never to actually give the shipper the product.

But the story doesn't end there... Two weeks after my bank reversed the charges, out of nowhere I get a shipping notification email. Sure enough I get a big box in the mail.. His "kit", consisted of two pieces of straight pipes and two regular mufflers... no bends or hardware. Like clockwork, Dan called my bank and tried to get the charges reinstated since he had shipped the "kit". Since I was refusing to ship the stuff back on my dime, my bank actually picked up the shipping charges to make things right.

Again, I would think twice about dealing with this company.

Shannon,

A few questions.

Did the 18" mufflers come with the dual outlets, or were they fabricated by your shop? What I mean is, those plates on the rear of the mufflers that the tailpipes come out of?

Is there any reason why you went with 2.0" rather than the stock 1,75" pipes, or is that all you could find to match a muffler to fit?

Can you take a few more shots from different angles and send them to me (or post them) so that I can talk to my shop about this? Brackets and the other sides of the mufflers, etc.? Particularly the split at the header collector and muffler hangers.

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

Yes the mufflers did come with the dual outlets. You can order them anyway you want. I forgot to add them to the list of parts above, but I also ordered 4x10" polished tips. My exhaust guy welded the slightly bent pipes and the tips onto the mufflers.

I was sorta forced to use 2" pipes. Stainless Specialities couldn't get anything smaller. All the places I called locally couldn't source it either.

Here's mufflers and tips:

Here's the rear most exhaust mount. I actually bolted this to the bolt that mounts the side/rear bumper mount:

Here is the mid-mount. Each side mounts to the rear diff mount bolts:

This is how it all fits together: Interestingly enough, the two front pieces are from TRF's stainless exhaust kit.

If you're interested, here's a pic of the v-band clamps:

I don't have any pics of the latest iteration mounted on the car, if you need them I'll shoot a few pics in next couple days.

Aren't the original pipes from that kit 1.75"? My guy has pipes in all sizes, I just want to make sure I'm getting the correct information.

Any other pics that you can offer will be great. If you email any higher resolution originals them to me, I'll print them on 8X10 glossy paper and take it over to his shop.

Yes the front pieces are 1.75. But the clamps and the mufflers were 2" so I just went with that. 1.75 would work better through the tunnel though.. just remember stainless can be a dog to expand.. so watch out.

Do you have the ability to use winzip? The original pics are huge.

Shannon- How about a word Document with pretty pic. I would love to add this to my stuff, More later my wife needs me to order something on the computer.

Paul, for best flow with your head 1.75 would give you better exhaust speed and overlap tugging.
Have you seen the new three into two into one header that Moss has in their latest catalog? I like it!

Proper design for widening the torque band. Wish the secondary was a little longer, but they probably ran into space limitations.

Might do that header on my next rebuild.
