Spent some time in the bush in South Africa and was amazed at the astounding view of the Milky Way galaxy and the Southern Cross without all the ambient light; a sight I'll never forget.
I love these time-lapse productions where the camera moves. Amazing.
Yes, seeing the night sky without light pollution is always stunning... and increasingly hard to do. In a great northern night sky, one can see Andromeda as about 5 degrees (huge). I've also see the Southern Cross and the Large Megellanic Cloud when near Uluru (Ayers Rock) in central Australia, and was blown away by all you could see.
My home state holds an astronomers festival every year because it is so far away from the ambient light of civilization, it is in the very sparsely populated north central Nebraska, just a few hundred miles from where I live, haven't done it, need to. https://www.nebraskastarparty.org/
Nebraska Highway 2 is also one of the best touring highways in the United States, you can go for miles without seeing any signs of your fellow man or civilization, and the sandhills have a very austere beauty, very different from the cornfields or I80.
Edge of The Cedars State Park in Blanding Utah gives the impression your setting in a Black bowl when looking up. The heavens are the most spectacular I've ever seen. I love Utah, it's a most beautiful state! Only thing was, we had to drive 70 miles to get bread and milk, only to find out they were out of milk! :highly_amused: PJ
I envy you guys on the other side of the pond sometimes. There are very few places left in the UK where you can get away from the light pollution and when you find them chances are it will be cloudy!
Images like those make me wish I could retire early and explore the beauty of the world. A deck chair, a cold beer and a night sky like that and I would be in heaven.
