Spitfire Just recieved my ebay Spitfire

Hello everybody, I am a new member.
I purchased a 1971 Spitfire off of Ebay last week which was listed under the heading "runs like a top". I was completely pumped!
I just recieved it on Thursday night. When the delivery driver removed the car from the truck, the starter on the Spitfire would barely turn over the motor. After it was running it rattled, smoked, coughed, and sputtered all the way home. Upon stopping in my driveway, it died and the starter just went "click". The car had to be pushed into the garage.
I, however, was still pumped. I knew this car would be maintenance intensive. It is all part of the fun. My first car was a Spitfire and I could handle this.
Battery good, wiring OK, 12 volts at starter when key turned. Is it just me or is this amazing. The guy sells the car two starts away from total starter failure. I also realize that the weber carb has an electric choke and the wire is not connected to anything. No wonder it smoked and missed, the choke was on all the way home. I find that everywhere that there should be rubber moulding, there is instead that foam strip that goes around screen doors, or worse yet, spray insulation foam stuff.
My 11 year old son and I remove the old starter, with difficulty. He convinces me, with very little difficulty, to push start the car so we could go for a ride. We bump start the car in reverse and back down the driveway. I leave an incredible pool and trail of black motor oil in front of our new house. The wife is not going to like this. It seems I perforated the oil filter while wrestling the starter out.
I am a little less pumped.
Luckily I live 45 minutes from the storefront of Victoria British. Very helpful they are. New starter, connected choke wire, new plugs etc, etc, etc. The car runs great! It still needs work (of course) but runs great!
I am so pumped!
I look forward to being a member of this great forum and hope that I can contribute.

Ah, yes, another victim... I mean, another enthusiast! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Welcome to the best place for all the 411 you'll need to get this little darlin' runnin' like the top it was advertised to be.

And don't mind the oil patch - it's actually good for the concrete/asphalt!

Great feeling isn't it?

You'll find the people on this forum to be a HUGE help, and good people as well.

Send along some pictures when you get a chance!

With high spirits like that, your going to love it.

I bought my 78 Spit without seeing it, when it was delivered it was not quite as advertised, took me a few weeks to get over buyers remorse, but by the middle of summer was in good running condition. And its a really fun car!

I dont think I will ever buy without seeing a car first, there are just too many out there.

Have fun!

Hmmmmm.

Sounds like one of Pedro's northern relatives is selling cars that "run like a top".

Congratulations on your purchase. I'm sure you will get it to where you want it soon.
Are you certain the starter is bad and it wasn't poor connections? Test the starter on a bench after cleaning all of the connections to make sure of it's condition.
Good luck.

Thanks for all of your warm welcomes. DougF, I did actually have the starter bench-tested at the local NAPA store, and the guy said that it was well and trully dead and wouldn't do anything. I was actually happy to hear him say this because it meant that I had correctly diagnosed the problem.
I am very afflicted. I just spent the last 40 minutes on my back in the passenger foot well in the dark installing the new glove box I purchased at Victoria British today. Lord knows what I can get up to tomorrow.
I will have to see if I can figure out why it vibrates so badly above 40 MPH. Seems to be drive train and not merely front end alignment.

Check tire inflation (just routine, not a factor) and then balance before getting into drive train.

And welcome to the forum. Nice to have you here.

I just took my first REAL drive in my "Ebay" Spitfire today and it was a blast. I got it a little over a month ago and it has been like assembling a full scale Monogram model, but it has been well worth it. I couldn't go too far or too fast because it still has the original 30 year old tires, but it ran great. I was able to get it as high as 3rd gear on my long dead end road and kick the overdrive in and all works well. I'm going somewhere for tires tomorrow. I don't care where or what I spend, but it's getting new tires tomorrow and I'm going for a longer drive. It has been 23 years since I drove my last Triumph and it was as fun today as it was then. This forum has been a huge help getting my car going. Thanks to all the helpful members.
