I just installed them, first I looked on the MX5 forums to find out what's recommended then I bought the PYLE PLX32 speakers.
They arrived today so I got them installed, then listened to a bunch of CSNY (ok Crosby Stills Nash & Young for you whipper snappers) and Emerson Lake and Palmer (really gives you the low bass and the high stuff with everything in between. I'm really happy with this setup, the 6x9 Sony Explode's in the back along with the headrest speakers really make it sound great.

Rick,

I had this same setup in Bugsy. My biggest issues with using Headrest Speakers in both seats along with a pair of 6 x 9's in the back deck, was my Sony AM/FM CD Player could not handle this load, when I really cranked the volume up. Not sure if I had an impedance mismatch but after 10 seconds at max volume, the power fuse on the radio would pop. My solution was to unhook the passenger side speakers as 90% of the time I was solo in Bugsy and after that did not have any issues. I agree though that headrest speakers with top down rock!

Put my hearing aids in this morning and all was right with the world. LOL

Jack - glad to 'hear' it!
They have made a great difference for my dad, he's 73 this year and has had them for 2 or 3 years now.
His were a bit tricky to get adjusted, but really improved everything for him!

Rick, I've never considered a radio worth the trouble to fit in a top down roadster until I had a Miata with head rest speakers. They are the chips and I'll bet really nice with upgraded speakers.

Kurt.
