Jeff - Yes, the Lancaster is out of Hamilton, Ontario. Looks like they've got a really nice musuem up there too. I hope they got it airborne on the Sunday, it costs $3,000 an hour just to keep in the air. I didn't see the Mustang at the race track, bummer! A snippet from the program about the Mustangs that I never knew..... Britain was having serious problems keeping up with the demand of supplying aircraft for the war, supplies were hard to come by and the industrial belts of the UK had been hard hit by the German attacks.... so they challanged America to help out and design a fighter plane.... in only 120 days! The Mustang went from drawing board to first flight with 3 days to spare!
On Sunday morning we took our kayaks to a local lake and were paddling around enjoying the peace and quiet, when from behind, we heard the unmistakable sound of a couple of large piston engines... turning around and looking up, we spotted two aircraft at about 2,000ft, heading due West. I called out to Andrew that if they were going to the second day of the airshow they needed to hang a left and head South.... no sooner were the words out of my mouth, they reached the end of the lake, banked steeply to the left and turned South.... so I guess they were headed there after all. They had a very short, stubby front end, and as they turned the sun sparkled off their immaculate aluminum bodywork. Based on what we had seen at the show on Saturday, we reckoned they were Thunderbolts.
I forgot to tell you about the Thunderbolt display..... seven of them, all beautifully restored, flying in formation and trailing colored smoke. A tremendous sight.
On Saturday night Andrew asked me which was my favourite plane at the show. Without hesitation, I replied " the Mustangs".
But after thinking for a few minutes about everything we'd seen that day, I realised that while the jet engined planes were phemomenal in their power and handling (we had flying displays from a Hawk, a Goshawk and an F16), there is nothing in this world that matches the sight, and especially the sound, of a piston engined aircraft.
