Have a guy where I live who is selling a 1971 XKE convertible straight 6 cylinder. Needs restoration but in decent condition. Comes with new interior, top and tires.
He wants $23,000 for it. Is this too high, priced right, great deal... I know sight unseen but just a ball park thought.
 
All depends on condition. Rust is the biggest concern, the tub at the sills and firewall where the front frame connects are particular places for concern. The prices can range wildly, IMO that seems high for the description.
 
I think the price is a bit dear. Look at the boot floor and battery tray areas for rust. Does it have a hard top? You will not be purchasing bits from Moss for this one.
 
The term "restoration" scares me. I have a nice series 2, and I think for 30 g's you could get a GREAT car, needing nothing. Hence this car is way over priced for me.

At this time, great cars are trading in the 50K region. This should give you some sort of value. I have seen series two vehicles go for 100K, but that was many years ago!
 
I just missed a 67 OTS, all original, no rust but needing cosmetics for $26K. Still kicking myself on that. A 71 S2 won't bring the money a S1 will. But if it is in decent driving shape, $23k is not too far out.

Went to look at the car. It is in a car repair shop in a town close to me. It is totally original. The paint has been added but poorly done. The leather interior is very dry and rough, the right rocker is rusted out, the rest is 39 years old.
The car belongs to a pharmasist(sp). The shop owner says the owner has them get it running then takes it home just to sit until he wants it running again. He says the car has free tires, interior and top. I didn't see the interior but did see the tires.

Since I am not familiar with Jaguar XKE's and how rare they are I can not comment on the prices relevance to the car and it's condition. I personaly think it is way too high but again am not sure if it is fair based on how rare the car might be.
While on a drive in my TR3A today I saw anothe Jag in a garage. Might go ask about it tomorrow.
 
A rocker rusted out can mean that the inner probably also suffers from rust. The left side may also be suffering and hasn't broken through yet. Depending on how deep it runs replacing/repairing the inner and outer structures can be expensive as the body needs to be disassembled and the tub put in a jig to keep everything straight.
 
This summer..one owner 22,000 miles..always maintained... an outstanding car...in Columbus Ohio... sold for $34,000....Great car... realistic price..needed nothing....these cars are around..have to be patient and practice due diligence.
 
Serious rust problems, a series II, other than the 2+2 coupe probably least valuable of all Etypes. Have you considered root canal without anesthesia once a month for 12 months, at least each bout of pain will be over with in a day.

I am also going down this path and have been looking for a while. Want to get one while I am still young enough (relative term) to enjoy it. I am looking for a Series 1 or 2 OTS that for my price range will probably need some work. I don't mind doing another rolling resto as I have enjoyed doing it on the barn find TR4, although I know that the E-type is more complex.
