Just Brought "B" Out Of Cold Storage!

Was going to replace the transmission seals last fall, but I figured I'd wait until warmer weather. Just woke the "B" up and alls well, except the tranny seals. Drip pan had quite a bit of oil in it. Who sells the best seals? Are Moss seals and gaskets ok? I've used them before and they were ok, but times change. I don't want to do this again in the near future, actually, never again! PJ

Re: Just Brought "B" Out Of Cold Storage!

If you're talking the in and out shaft seals, Paul... remove 'em and take 'em to a local bearing house to have the things matched. A good thing to do (for them) is measure the O.D. housing(s) and shaft diameters with GOOD micrometers and carry those spec's along with. The seals would likely be less costly and of known good mfgr.

Re: Just Brought "B" Out Of Cold Storage!

Yes Doc, the front shaft seal and the rear shaft seal in the OD box. I know Moss sells them, but not sure of the quality. As to your suggestion, I have a good old time auto parts house by me and the guy is tops in helping find odd ball parts etc. Plus he only sells top brand stuff. If he doesn't have it, it only takes a day for a delivery. I'll take the old seals to him with the inside and outside measurements from a micrometer reading. Thanks for the tip Doc, much appreciated. PJ

Re: Just Brought "B" Out Of Cold Storage!

Doc, I finally got the B up in the air to really look over the tranny leak and here's what I found. The rear seal is as dry as a bone, the bottom of the unit is also dry and if the front seal was leaking it should be wet. But, the bottom of the OD unit was soaked with oil. I checked the bolts on the lower cover and they were snug but not as tight as they should have been and the solenoid cover was the same. Seems the oil was coming from both of those points. After draining the oil, I pulled both plates and figured the gaskets should have been re torqued after the car was driven a few times. I guess the hot and cold played a little on the gaskets and bolts as it didn't leak a drop after I replaced the gaskets and screen a couple years ago. Now to add to the dilemma, here's a shot of both covers and how they were warped.
Here's one cover and the arrows indicate just how much the ends were warped and what size feelers gage would slide in this area while setting on a flat thick glass plate. I resurfaced this piece and it is now perfectly straight.

Next is the solenoid cover and just how much it was warped from one corner (A) to the other B). Which I also resurfaced and is now perfectly straight.

Normally I wouldn't think they would leak and they didn't at first, but I guess after the expanding and contraction sessions over a period of time the warped plates aggravated the situation. Bottom line, I didn't have to pull the lump! And that's a good thing. PJ

Going to the parts house to get some when I finish here. I usually only use High-Tac on the gaskets, basicly just to hold them in place, but I'm using your suggestion on this. Thanks Doc. PJ

Doc, The leaks are gone! I guess it isn't an MGB any more.

No, you're just out of oil

Re: Just Brought "B" Out Of Cold Storage!

I wouldn't be too enthusiastic until it has some miles on it, Paul. And do NOT say anything within earshot of th' car. :jester:

Re: Just Brought "B" Out Of Cold Storage!

Yep everytime I've fixed all the leaks a new one comes out of nowhere. Just because you've neutered it dont think it's going to stop lifting its leg so to speak.
