John Surtees 1934 -2017 RIP

John Surtees, who has died aged 83, is the only man to have won a grand prix world championship on two and four wheels.
A brilliant motorcyclist who dominated the top 500cc class for much of the late 1950s, Surtees moved on to cars and immediately established himself as a leading figure, winning the Formula 1 championship for Ferrari in 1964.
Through the mid-1960s he was one of the towering figures in F1 along with Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jackie Stewart and Dan Gurney.

Very sad news. He was my favorite driver back in the day. Fast and smooth in anything. In the 1966 F1 season he posted wins driving for two different teams!....the Belgian for Ferrari and the Mexican for Cooper. That year he also won the Can-Am (group 7 series) in his Lola T70. What a driver.

I was too young to follow him during his heyday, but have always known the name and was very impressed when I learned more about the man and his accomplishments. RIP, another great one gone

Exceptions to the general rule of the old racers divided into two types - those who got killed before they got good and those who got killed afterwards. Much safer today.
