Many of you may know John Fitch, the former racing driver / inventor that developed the Fitch Phoenix and the Fitch Safety Barrier.
In WW II he was a decorated combat pilot. He was a team Mercedes driver in the 50s and has been an important part of Lime Rock since it opened (he lives right down the street).

He's a nice old man (90) and I've talked to him at LR several times.
More recently, he has been one of the oldest people to attempt a Land Speed Record (in a highly modified, vintage MB-300SL)

Apparently, he's become embroiled in a leaking oil tank debacle with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection. The VSCCA and other groups are collecting money to help him through this time.

~Here~ is the full story.

Nial,

I'm glad to hear that he's still around.
One of the "Gentleman Racers".

That stinks. I have railed against the beaurocratic mentality several times in the past, and this is another perfect example of how they love to make life difficult for people, just because they can! Life's weasels tend to gravitate towards this kind of a job, more's the pity!
