Japanses Garden anyone? [especially rock]

Of course, you could do a Zen type garden:

I need to put gravel on the ground like pictured above around the stuff I already have. All I need to know is what prep is needed before I put down the gravel for the gravel area.

Great. If you want something like in that photo, you'll need to get the area perfectly flat and level (or gravity and precipitation will gradually wreak havoc). Then either pour concrete for a permanent subsurface, or add landscape fabric, then sand, then the gravel.
