Basil will probably boot me outta here on this one but I gotta ask. Has anyone ever undergone the process of
replacing the rear clip of a 2+2 or coupe with rear fenders, tonneau panel, lid and associated parts from a roadster. I saw a car on ebay a few months back that actually sold for a very nice price as a roadster but was in fact a 2+2 converted into a roadster and looked (at least in the pics) incredibly good. As anyone who has participated in my posts knows I am working on a restore of a 69 2+2 that I was able to acquire quite cheaply this summer. It'll never be a show car but already is a nice looker....but I'm a roadster lover at heart and looking at options.......best regards,

There used to be a kit available to do the conversion. The amount of work that it would take to do a decent job is staggering. If you are capable of doing first class fabrication and welding, and have a lot of time, it is probably do able. If not, finish the 2+2, and sell it, and put the funds to a roadster project. Or, drive the 2+2. I like those, and think they are the only "practical" E type. They look the same from the drivers seat, and go down the road well. Fit a webasto (sliding cloth) sunroof if you just gotta have open air motoring.

Jesse has good advice. It's a lot of work, and there is a lot to be said for using the car as it was intended.

A lot of the converted roadsters are re-shells, as reproduction tubs are available in the UK.

THANKS for the insight and advice....this restoration
hobby can be dangerous. I buy the idea of a Wabesto
Sunroof. 2 are available at Michigan dealer at $425.00
plus shipping. Has anyone any info on installation effort
and reliability (vendor says no leak). Also anywhere I moight find a member pic on an XKE that has one installed. Couldn't find one here or on Jag Lovers...would love to see the look before I decide to cut a huge hole in the roof...regards

Those Webastos, if installed correctly, do not leak. They are a good product, you'll be really happy with one.

They are more common in the UK, maybe a Google search might turn up a few pictures?

I know that it has been done, but I have no idea where to find a photo. My experience with them has been great. I had a Rover 2000 years ago that had one, and it was the only thing on the car that didn't leak. All of the pre wedge TVRs had them, and except for the covers wearing out, I cannot recall any issues. I helped install one on a griffeth once, and the hardest thing about the job was to muster up the courage to start that first cut!

THANKS ALL..I did find a photo album of a member on
the Jag Lovers website with about 8 different pics of
E-types with the fold back Stratos400 sunroof installed.
Didn't make me jump right on the order....think I'll let
the idea gel a little while longer. Always open to anyone
elses thoughts, comments or pics..

OK...decided to go with the Webasto 400. Ordered today. I'll keep post updated when installation project is initiated. Anyone's experience , tips or issues regarding install of this sunroof unit is appreciated. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

a complete 380...ordered the Webasto Solaris spoiler...
rather than the 400 fold back..decided to modernize. BIG>>BIG opening..
I'm in the training phase building up the
confidence to cut a 36 by 44 hole in the
roof....when that magic day of completion arrives...I'll post some pics....
