When I got my car, the radio wasn't installed because the previous owner had an aftermarket CD player installed. Fortunately he didn't cut the harnes. The old radio doesn't come on, so it's probably bad. I was wondering if maybe it had something to do with the radio security system if removed from the car. Is there a procedure for reconnecting the radio, once it's been removed?

If the radio is getting power and is working properly, it should read code in the display. If it doesn't, either the radio is somehow defective, or it isn't getting power.
 
I got it working, for some reason it wasn't getting power from the 12v memory line. As a temporary work around i've jumped it to the +12v line until I get my wiring diagram's. All my fuses are good, so not sure where to look next. I was going to be bummed if it didn't work because this car has a cd changer.

Worst case I can run a line straight to full time power but I'd like to keep this car completely stock.

I encourage you to keep it completely stock. I have encountered failures such as you are describing that were caused by the fuse box failure. The circuitry in back of the fuses can drop the voltage and the fuse remains good. Trace the wiring from the fuse box forward to the radio memory voltage. You will need the Jag schematics on your model to do this without a lot of work.
 
IIRC, the XJS radio fuse is an inline fuse on the right side of the console. Remove the console cover and you should see it.
 
I'm still waiting for my manuals which should include schematics. Anyone know what fuse the 12V memory line goes to? It's on all the time, so maybe the same circuit as the ODO.

I'll look for that inline fuse. It's an XJ-6 but maybe it's the same setup.

One thing I really like about the Jaguar wiring is the lack of wrapping on the looms. So much easier to trace a wire if needed.

The fuse boxes that have failed that my first message described are on the XJ6 (XJ40) and are in the kick panels to the left or right and in front of the doors. The lids for these fuse boxes will list what the fuse application is. Look for radio and radio memory. This car does not have any in line fuses thatI can think of unless they were put in with the radio exchange.
 
Got my manuals on CD today. Turns out there are 2 inline fuses under the center console. The radio memory fuse was, predictably, burned out.

Anyways, the radio works as it should.

You have an XJS V12. In future inquiries, state that that is your model. The 6 vrs. the 12 is a different automobile. The electrical layout is totaly differnt.
 
I have a 1990 XJS with the Alpine Radio. If the power to the radio has been disconnected, when power is restored you must punch in a 5 digit code to override the security feature. It may be written down somewhere in the owners manual, or in a flyer on the radio if it came in the folder with the owners manual. You won't get very far without the code.

You have only three tries to enter the code correctly before you must wait several hours before you can try again. The code is entered by pushing the radio buttons, which are numbered.

If your radio is an Alpine, you may be able to contact Alpine with the vehicle VIN and the radio S/N to get them to give you the code.

I found the code written on a piece of tape on the center ashtray lid. It's my understanding that a Jaguar dealer can give you the code.

If you provide a dealer with your VIN# and the radio serial number, which is on the tag attached to the radio case, the dealer can supply the code.
