On a recent thread there was some discussion about checking things over real well before installing them (I think). Anyhow I made a comment about maybe I should check my speedometer before I install it. Moseso, encouraged me to go ahead and do that for all the obvious reasons, thanks Moses. Once I got the bezel and glass off I saw that indeed I might have a problem. After more dismanteling I saw that I indeed DID have a problem, a major one. I have included a picture so you can see what I'm talking about. Apparently sometime in its history it jumped off the bench and landed of the odometer reset lever. I think the wheel shaft is OK. My question is, once I take the wheels off, can the plate be returned to it's original flat position? Enough so that the odometer will work as advertised? I'm not a metal guy and some of my experiences in the past have not been good with that type of repair.

Your thoughts and suggestions greatly appreciated.

Worth a try, but I'm not real hopeful. But if worst comes to worst, I'm sure I've got a speedo head that is damaged but could donate a trip meter.
 
If the shaft is not bent, the sheet metal foot should be "repairable". That said, pay careful attention to the position of the drive gears between the odometer number wheels. Make sure you bench test the odometer and speedometer before putting the speedometer assembly back in its case.

If you do not have a copy of Anthony Rhodes PDF on Jaeger & Smiths Speedometer Repair, Google for it and download a copy to use as you work through this. It is invaluable.
 
Yes Doug, I have Anthony Rhodes PDF on the speedos. I also have his web site bookmarked on my favorites list, I discovered yesterday. Thank you for your other comments.
Randall, I'm going to give the repair a try but depending on how that comes out I may be contacting you.

Just to let you know that it can be done, here it is and no parts left over. I took the bent up frame over to my body guy. He's a magic man with metal, he looked it all over and in about 8 min's flat handed a perfect frame back to me. I said, GREAT, thanks, asked him how much and he said "come back to see me". A really good guy.
He was doing a frame off on a 1930 Ford A Sedan. Neat! I love old cars.
So now all I have to do is put it all back together, bench test it and pop it in the dash and I can move on. All because somebody said "Hey Tink, you have your speedo in the wrong place".
