TR2/3/3A J type on a TR3 tranny

Has anyone fitted a Volvo J type overdrive on a TR3 tranny? I emailed Quantum Mechanics and John said he had the parts listed on his web site to do this but just took another look and there was nothing there. I have a strong TR3 tranny and saving this J type for years to do something like this.

J-type on a TR3 gearbox is really tough; no one makes the required mainshaft as it was never a combination offered by the factory. You might be able to pay the folks at ORS to make one for you, but it won't be cheap.

There is also the problem of making it fit the car. You'll need to remove the rear crossmembers and cut the tabs where it mounts, plus notch the frame for clearance. The J-type sits a lot farther back than the A-type that was offered originally. Then you'll have to fabricate a new mount, figure out how to attach to the frame, and so on.

I knew it wouldn't be easy and forgot about the extra length. It's been laying around and trying to get some use out of it and I do want a overdrive for the car.

I have a J Type on my 3A but I used a Triumph 2500 all syncro gearbox. It is very simular in shape to the old 3A box. To fix the mounting problems just use a right angled speedo drive and a rear bracket from MOss. All will be well.
