I've got oil pressure! Now what?

I did everything you guys suggested. My oil pressure gauge seems sort of sticky, but it is working. It seems to work better the more it works. It has been sitting for 15 years, so it may be a bit sticky after sitting all that time.

I put four gallons in the gas tank. I tried using the primer handle on the gas pump, but I don't think it is pulling any gas to the carbs. I tried cranking the engine as a wild shot, but nothing. What should I do next?

Pull the hose off and see if it is pumping gas up to the carbs. Do you hear the pump go tick, tick, tick. Or you may have a mechanical pump. Still ought to be able to see if it is pumping gas when turning over.

Or if it's too dark to see, light a match and you'll know if it's pumping or not.

I got it started!!!!! I only drove it ten feet up and back, but it is the first time it has run in 25 years. What a great sound! I still have to figure out how to set the timing better (took a wild guess). I need to adjust the carbs too, but I am almost there. Any instruction on either would greatly be appreciated.

WOOHOO!

I have to run in a minute, but, recently someone here was talking about setting timing with vacuum - might be an option for you if someone can search it.

with carb - don't worry till timing is set, then get it running under load and use the color of the plugs to help you.

congrats! there were a lot of frustrations at the end there, glad you persevered!

I am not sure if I should start another thread at this point, because I have many questions that focus on timing and carb adjustment now. In order to use the plugs, don't I have to drive it a while? Could you please explain what you are talking about in more detail? I have done a vacuum timing on my TR6, and it was fairly easy to do once I figured out how to tie into the vacuum correctly. I have no idea how to do this on the Bugeye, however. Does someone have detailed instructions how to hook up the vacuum gauge and what reading I should get? I may try a timing light in the meantime, although using a timing light didn't seem all that easy either. I couldn't even figure out where the timing marks were or how to use them last night.

I really don't understand the carbs very well either. I have the original H-1 carbs on this car along with a standard 948 engine. How do I tie into the vacuum system in this car? What reading should I get with the vacuum gauge? I need to read more this weekend, but if any of you have tips on either adjustment, it would greatly be appreciated. My wife has had to listen to my whining for years on this car, and I am really hoping to make it up a little by taking her for a drive this weekend.

Kevin

Kevin, you'll have your car sorted out in very short order. Congrats on that! :driving:

From one LBC hubby to another, tell your wife you want to take her for a drive. First stop on the drive, either a massage or manicure/pedicure for her. While she's doing that, you hit the local florist for a nice bouquet, roses, etc. - you know what she likes. Give her the flowers when she's done. Then another drive and dinner at her favorite place. Dessert is up to you!

She'll forget ALL about the years of whining!!

Probably easiest to do a static timing. The timing marks can only be seen by looking at the from the front of the engine, underneath. They're right in front of the oil pan, and the mark is, of course, on the crank pulley. .. the mark furthest to the left is Top Dead Center. Then 5 degrees advance then 10. You want 5 degrees for static timing.

You need to get EVERYTHING else set BEFORE you do the carbs.

to set the timeing get a timeing light. Might even be able to borrow one. Get the cheepest one you can thats all that is required.
