...Madison County, Alabama is the best kept secret in America. "Forbes" Magazine just named it the 'Best Place in America to Weather the Economic Downturn'. Grab a copy of the magazine to read the entire article.

Here are the top 10 places to weather the upcoming storm:

Madison County, Alabama
Pulaski County, Arkansas
Adams County, Colorado
Greenville County, South Carolina
Jefferson Parish, Louisiana
Polk City, Iowa
Mobile County, Alabama
Montgomery County, Texas
Johnson City, Kansas

That seems a bit ironic...Jefferson Parish, Louisiana to weather a storm.....

EASY, Pete.... bein' <span style="font-style: italic">too</span> literal can get ya in trouble. :smirk:

Sure, those places have been at rock bottom economically for years. Can't get any worse.

And a large part of the reason is the technology base for Missile Defense and related programs - at least for the time being. Huntsville is the hub for Missile Defense Agency.

Madison Country AL (e.g., Huntsville) has been in the forefront of the space and science technology industry for years - and its economy reflects that. I've spent as much time there as I have at home!

Actually, Madison County is at 3.8% unemployment & has more PhD's than Silicon Valley...the military base here is growing because of BRAC ($199,000,000 expansion project under construction right now!), taxes are low, the computer industry, the space industry, and several highly technical industries are here or moving here....Toyota recently built a huge plant to build their V8 engines & is expanding to where they'll have a $250,000,000 manufacturing complex here!

In addition to our growing military base, we also have the NASA Marshall Flight Center....along with the US Space & Rocxket Center & the US Space Camp.

A list of the Fortune 500 companies in our research center includes Intl. Business Machines, AT&T, Boeing, United Technologies, Lockheed Martin, Johnson Controls, Northrop Grumman, Cisco Systems, General Dynamics, Raytheon, Electronic Data Systems, Delta Air Lines, Xerox, Texas Instruments, Computer Sciences, Avnet, Arrow Electronics, L-3 Communications, ITT, Science Applications Intl., Jacobs Engineering Grp......plus ADTRAN, SAIC, Teledyne Brown Engineering, Benchmark Electronics, Inc., Benchmark Electronics, Inc. & many more...with construction going on in the research park right now! Heck, Verizon just built a $44,000,000 complex here!

Universities in the county include University of Alabama in Huntsville, Alabama A&M University, Faulkner University, Oakwood College, University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center.....plus numerous community & technical colleges.

....& Madison County is the fastest growing county in Alabama; & no, I don't think <span style="font-style: italic">"at rock bottom economically for years"</span> applies here!

Oh, Madison County was also recently named one of the best places in the US to raise children!

Doc...I had to re-read what you wrote! At first glance I thought you wrote liberal....not literal....! LoL

I ate oysters in Alabama once.
They were very good, indeed.
I don't remember in what city
I was working. It's been a while.

It's still hot and sticky.
hehehehe....average lowest temperature of 30° is in January; average high of 90° is in July - notice I said "average" as we have what is called a humid subtropic climate (average rainfall of 6.6" in March) which means we do have hot, humid summers and generally mild winters...hot, humid summers are when we sit in a porch swing under a ceiling fan sipping cold ice tea!!

..& we've gone 10 years without any significant snow.

Oh, I forgot to tell ya'll in my first post that the median yearly household income is $60,498 – higher than the national average; but, the cost of buying a home isn't comparably high at just $193,700 on average.....& taxes on that $193.700 house are only $491 annually!

Yep, best kept secret in the US!

<span style="font-style: italic">"taxes on that $193.700 house are only $491 annually!'</span>

That $491 would about pay the tax on my 5x10' garden shed!

Yep, there's supposedly only 1 place in the country that has lower property taxes than we do! Sales tax isn't bad either: 4.5% in the county, 8.5% in the city.

You keep blabbin' about it and it won't be a secret any more!

While you sip your iced tea and sit under a ceiling fan to escape the humidity, I'll be out driving.

You need to apply for that job!! Hazel Green is a darned good school....after I retired from the Army, I taught for 11 years at Buckhorn High School, one of their biggest competitors in the same system....relatively new also, built within the last 12 years or so.

Let me know when you come down for an interview & I'll give you the tour!
