It's whistling again....

My TR6 has lately taken on a new noise and it has me perplexed. I get a distinct whistling noise somewhere out of the engine comparment that rises and falls with engine rmp, w/ or w/o clutch action. The last things I have done to the car are put in new thrust washers, changed the water pump (thought that was the noise, but no), new Delco-style alternator (stethoscope has no noise here). All vacumns are intact. Could this be a timing chain noise? Cam noise?
Engine is basicallly new (15K). Am I about to blow up? Sounds like the a fan noise. Could bearings make such a sound? At wits end, again. Plan on doing a competition cam and increase compression soon. Gotta know!

You don't have a hose leak anywhere do you?
Just a thought.

Why dont' you take the fan belt off of a minute or so and see if it still does it? That would eliminate the fan, water pump and alternator. At least you would know it wasn't the motor.

Sounds annoying but not serious. Sometimes you can find an exhaust leak by just (carefully) placing your hand in the vicintity of the exhaust system joints.

TR6Bill:
If you had not eliminated the alternator, I would have bet the noise is coming from the alternator. If it is a vacuum leak they usually get louder on the rev-down compared to the rev-up. Have you lubed the distributor shaft? Could your oil pump be sucking some air? Do you have the OEM fuel pump or electric? I like the suggestion made earlier: loosen the fan belt and crank it up for a test; sure would eliminate some prime suspect areas.

Working on it, VD, got a long list of honey-do's that have taken priority right now. The nerve of that woman!

Dude you need to get your priorities straight.
