Hello,
Sure hope Santa brought everyone lots of British bits. He left me a nice set of Moss sprite car mats.
Got inspired yesterday and decided to remove my engine.(5 hours) The guy in the pictures is my neighbor he keeps me married as asking my wife for help does not go over well.
As I mentioned in previous threads I have low oil pressure 5-10 psi at idle and about25-30 at cruise. I did another compression test yesterday and here is what I got:
1. 135
2. 130
3. 128
4. 130
Then I did a cylinder leak down test, no sign of blow by, the top end seems good... Going to buy some plasti gauge today and see what readings I have.
I was planning a full rebuild on this 1098 but after talking with Hap, he made me reconsider what I really want. I have a 1275 eng sitting in the garage, just waiting for a performance rebuild, think I might just go that way. Fix up the 1098 for now and spend my money on the 1275. Off to work today so it may be 2 or 3 days before I can share my engine readings, just maybe I can get away with a regrind and bearings. I did look at the mains they are 2 inch and stamped .020 so I guess I can still do another regrind.

Yep, would agree if a 1297 is in your future. bearings is prob just what you need. A little fresh up.

Phil,
If you're planning on keeping the 1098 for some future project, putting some money into it may be justified.

BUT, if you plan on selling it, you might want to leave well enough alone. It's been my observation that most buyers, myself included, aren't willing to spend much on someone else's rebuild. Receipts (might) provide an insight as to what parts were used in the refresh, but there's always a question about the quality of the work. I think most of us hedge our bet by buying in on the low side. I would think that it will be hard to get out of the 1098 what you're about to spend.

Seems you've made you're mind up to move to a 1275 (good decision)...if it were me, I'd be spending my money on it.

Just my opinion,

Ray

Ray, that sounds like Phils game plan. Just bearings and maybe an oil pump for now, and sink the money into the 1275 later.

Me too, Ray. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
Hey Phil, if you decide to get rid of the 1098, keep me in mind.
Jeff

Hello,

Well going to sneak out to the parts store get some plasti gauge and might get a parts washer, wanted one for years. Should hide ok in the garage, then the response had it for years honey. Work starts late today, going to Ottawa for the night, then Miami tomorrow. I have know intention of ever parting with the 1098 just want it to run like a Swiss clock for 2008. Then I will bag it and keep for my spare, also because it is original. My conversation with Hap is going to be expensive, oh well, never seen a hearse with a roof rack
Cheers Phil

Phil, I just had to ask about the engine. Many people don't want the old stuff cluttering up the garage. I'm definitely not one of them!
Here's a couple of shots of the 1098 from my '65, during the initial build stages. Basically just a test fit for a photo op.
I wound up with about 92 HP at the flywheel.

Phil, I had one of those expensive conversations with Hap as well -- my new motor should be done in a month or 2. Sounds like you've got a good plan there. I like the idea of keeping the original motor handy as a spare. I'll do the same with the 948 in the Tunebug. Someday it will get a rebuild and then be packed away. Nice to keep the original bits with the cars.

That's a nice looking motor, Jeff.

Ok had a good trip to the parts source. Picked up a small parts washer on sale today it was 70 % off. Now to find a good hiding spot. So I plasti gauged the journals here is what I discovered.
The mains seem to be all ok at .0015, very very fine striations on the main surface. Now the rods are a different story. Two off them had striations that would easily catch your finger nail and two had fine striations that you could feel.
The rods varied from:
1. .0019
2. .0025
3. .003
4. .0025

I guess this would be my oil pressure problem. Now I am curious about the top end, I wonder if the pistons are stock. Maybe I should just strip it and do a minimal rebuild, new rings etc. Time to think. Well off to the salt mine I go, someone has to work around here.
Phil
Jeff, nice 1098, 92hp sounds expensive
Drew look forward to seeing another fine Hap motor

Phil, it was. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
If it were I, I'd at least take the rods out and have the big ends resized, the crank checked, and ground or polished as required.
Break the glaze on the cylinders, pop in some new rings, and call it a day. Don't forget to check the oil pump for wear.

...and why do so many of us with LBC's also have RC airplanes in our garages?? (I have 7 up in the rafters).
Bill

Ahhhh, something to tinker with along with hand eye coordination?

BTDT...got a couple somewhere up in the attic.

Got out of it...12 weeks to turn a bunch of little balsa sticks into an airplane...3 seconds to turn an airplane back into a bunch of little balsa sticks!

we want engines with REAL power? /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

My brother was driving home from a jet model show last year (as a spectator) had one crash in front of his van - almost hit the van - I think they said it was worth in the thousands. If I pay that much I should at least get to ride in it /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I saw a vid of a beautiful jet powered F-100D, in France.

Just after takeoff, it half rolled into the ground. Seems the "pilot" forgot to extend the antenna on the transmitter!
Expensive mistake.
And the B-52 model that went in. That one had to cost some serious coin, in engines alone.
I got out of flying modeling years ago, for such reasons.
