I always planned on keeping the TR4 unless I could get hold of a TR5 again (used to have one in the UK) – highly unlikely given the scarcity and cost of them over in Europe.

Another car I always wanted, but didn’t think I would ever have a chance of affording as a hobby was a convertible Jag E-type Series 1 or 2. As reported, I got one and the repairs are coming on nicely AND under budget so far.

While we are excited to have it, we are both sad that the TR4 is going to have to go due to garage limitations. I will be putting it up for sale in the New Year in time for driving season. Before I do, I wanted to advise (and thank) those who have helped me in so many ways to get this car back on the road. The history of the car with me can be followed through my posts over the years.

I never quite got around to doing the overdrive conversion as the original box was fine and "if it ain't broke don't fix it"; the freshly rebuilt TR6 OD box is in the garage waiting to be installed.

So I am swapping one model that is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2011 for another - ironic.

Merry Christmas to all.

Good job, Ian! Pity you can't keep them both...

I look forward to watching the progress on the E-type.

And Merry Christmas back at ya!

Mickey

Good luck!

And no fake sandpaper to you, too! (Non illegitimus carborundum)

Merry Christmas to you too Ian! Hate to see you leave the TR4 fold, but I confess that an E type would tempt me as well. Just make sure that new owner joins up with us!

I envy you. I always and still do want a Jag series 1 or 2.

You can still post some pictures and drop back here to give a link.

Like they say in another well known group, "once you are in the family, you are in for life", so we'll be waiting for the updates.

Thanks guys. The TR4 and TR5 have a lot of sentimental value to us (still love that shape), but I had to grab the E when the opportunity arose. Like they say, "never say never".

Ian,

Definitely keep us updated on the Jag. That was a car I too wouldn't mind owning but I'd have to at least keep my first TR4A.

Also be sure to direct whoever buys your TR4 here!

Howdy Ian,

Sorry to hear your going to sell the TR but being an "E-Type" Lover Myself (Had "4" of them); I can`t say as I blame you.

You may remember my `66TR4A-IRS (Olde English White) I had at the show in Hellertown back a couple of yrs. I said (More than Once); That one was a keeper cause she ran & looked so good but; "Sold It". The "Bug" bit me for a "Bugeye". Bought a `59; Played with her for a season & "Sold It". Now my `57TR3 Small Mouth under Full, Body-Off Restoration.

All my friends ask me; "How long will you keep this one"? My reply has been; I`m never again going to say "Its a Keeper" cause If "History" repeats Itself!!!!!!!!!!!!

If an "E-Type" came along (That I could afford); I`d sell my soul.

What year etc "E-Type" did you buy? Send me a pic or two via my email or PM me some pics.

Best Wishes & Happy Holidays to All,

Russ

As a kid in the 60's, having replaced the TR2 with a Carmen Red E Type coupe, it was a case of hopping from one Prince of Darkness to another.

Took me 20 years before I'd tackle another Jag.

On a brighter note, we caught The Eagles last live show in Oz last night. Unbelievable.

Merry Xmas.

Viv.

Hi Ian,

The pic looks like the car is in really quite good shape!

The "E-Types" have always been notorious for the "Sills & Floors" going away. You say; You "Only" need the "Outer Sills & Floors". Typ. if the "Floors" need replacement; Don`t the "Inner Sills" typ. need to be redone?

I just thought about this; On an "E-Type" is the "Outer & Inner" Sill all "One" pcs?

Best Wishes & Happy Holidays to All,

Russ

+ 1 for selling my soul for an E-Type roadster! Yours looks VERY nice......it's certainly not just a driver !!
Everyone has a story, of course, but I passed on an E-type purchase 30 years ago at $1800. It was a yellow roadster with a bashed in bonnet, but the owner had all new original Jag parts in boxes ready to re-do it.. I have been kicking myself ever since.
With Jags especially, it only makes sense to buy a really good example to start with as restoration is prohibitively expensive. Looks like you have been able to do just that. As close as I'll ever get it appears, is a Bentley workshop manual I bought back then to see what was involved in repairing the primrose roadster. I still thumb thru it when "Jag Fever" hits (which is regularly)
For now I enjoy every day I get in the TR3.
Merry Christmas to all who have been so generous in their time and efforts to help me and all the others on this forum

CHEERS!!!

Russ, the lower inner sill has been cut back (up) about 1 1/2 inches and a repair section welded along the length. Everything above that is solid, so no need to replace. I defer to the judgement of Terry at Lippincott's Garage who only seems to spend customers $$$ when absolutely necessary. He could of made much more $$$ by just saying that the whole inner sill should be removed and replaced. I have looked at his work on the other Jags in his shop (drool  ) and he is quite capable of restoring cars to 100 pointers if that is what the customer wants.

how'd that go--"the most expensive car in the world is a cheap jaguar"
Not that yours was cheap mind ya-- just a quote I remember everytime I get Jag fever
