It's my first day

I grew up in a Datsun/Nissan family but I really want my first restoration to be British. More specifically a triumph spitfire. I've researched a little online and have a question as to which year is best? Does the 1976 really have higher compression? And is overdrive the way to go?
Any and all help would be much appreciated!

As for which year is the best, you'll no doubt get lots of different viewpoints once you post in the TR forum. My favorites are the round tail models up through '70 - prettier, in my opinion. The later engines are shared with Midgets, so there's some marque rivalry there, as well as a propensity to have issues with thrush washers.

Welcome to the mad house!

The later cars had revised rear suspension due to earlier models' propensity to tuck their rear wheels under due to liftoff in a corner. So I guess that the sweet spot is a Mk4 (pre 1500) that had the revised suspension and the proper Triumph 1300cc engine.
