You likely have an "electric" choke, supposed to be "automatic". It's between the carbs and looks like a small vertical cylinder with a wire attached to it.

I'll re-post:

Um....340's had side-draught carbs. No manual choke. I think the 240's were the same. 2.4L had downdraught Solexes, and a manual choke. Does this one have a sliding choke lever outboard of the speedometer? If so, it's a 2.4L dash...check to see there is a place for the other end to connect to.
Solexes connected to levers on both carbs.

I thought that was the "fix" to get more power outta 2.4L...a straight port head, side-draught carbs, same electrical starting carb arrangement as the 3.4 and 3.8L units.

I really want to see a picture of the dash, driver's side, outboard the speedometer. Do you really have a choke lever there?
Usually, the "Otter Switch" fails, and folks hide a simple on/off switch somewhere under the dash, or in the parcel shelf area, to energize the electrically operated starting carb.

I actually found a photo of a 240 with a manual choke and SU's. No idea how they hooked that up. Maybe there were "running changes". All I can imagine is a Triumph-style choke......but there's a lot under the carbs on a RHD to get in the way.

The more I think about this, the only 340 and 240's I've seen have been LHD and US Spec. I wonder is Euro Spec still had a manual choke option, whereas US spec mandated auto choke?

this is a UK car
the car showed up in the dark so we may have missed something in the excitment
when the car gets back from the shop ill look around under the dash
there is a weird switch to the right of the steering wheel

the reason we were looking for the choke was the car seemed to be ideling fast

Im going to get one drive in it from the EU Control to winter storage. sigh
wow your in kirkland i lived in Richland for about four months!

steve

Tri-Cities. Get over the hill to that area once in a while.
Describe weird switch to right of steering wheel.
Lever, sliding up and down? Or actual switch?
Switch would probably be overdrive. I'll have to close this thread and look on the other to see if you have a manual o/d transmission or an automatic. Automatic would be a hold switch.

If a lever with knob just like the heater control bits that bracket the speaker in the centre console, that's choke. Look to the side of the lever housing, you'll see the lettering for choke, and on console, cabin, windscreen, hot and cold.

it will have to wait till it gets back from the shop monday, my memory is it was a vertical rectangular backing plate in yellow/gold metal with a red light and a rounded button like a large winding knob on a watch,

steve

Dash lights.....on RHD, toggle to left of key. Dim, flicker and off. NO dash lights unless at least parking lamps on. No separate fuse. Also, map light (to right of starting switch) does not work unless at least park lamps on. Map light under top dash cowl cover. Easy to remove top cover to check wiring and bulb. Two bolts, on studs, one per side. To work on centre dash section, two thumb screws, top corners (hidden by same cowl cover when sitting in car normally), remove them, set into cigar tray so you don't misplace the,. press Vent knob forward to clear, and carefully lower on bottom hinges.

yep found that and taped off the few loose wires in there
the map lights wires were disconnected
I hope this is great project the stuggle is getting it under cover before the next snow. I would hate to have it just under a car cover for the winter. my poor leaper has a bald spot on his head from cover wear
my high beems are out oh well and it looks like the water temp isnt working hey is that electirc? on my Spridget its a tube of some sort of liquid

steve

Water temp electric. If oil and fuel working (also electric), the instrument regulator is okay. On my 2.4L, under the inlet manifold, forward, just aft of thermostat. Original ones, riveted stud to spade for wire, works loose, sometimes rotating it around the stud a bit fixes that. Got coolant in it?

Look to the dimmer switch contacts for the missing high beams.
