As I posted here, I have installed two spam fighting programs to help reduce and prevent spammers from successfully registering here. The first program counts the elapsed time between a new member starting the registration form and finishing (submitting) it. If that time is too short, the program knows it must be a bot and not a human and rejects the registration outright. Then, if a spammer gets past the first check, a second program comes into play and compares the IP address and email address with a couple of huge spammer databases. If the person (or bot) registering is in those databases, then again, it kicks the person or bot out and doesn't allow the registration to be completed. All this on top of the regular "Human Verification" check new members have to go through. I just counted up the number of registrations booted due to the "bot-blocker" program (the time check) and in just the past 24 hours, that system prevented 49 registrations from being completed! Then, of those that made it past the forum human verification and the bot-blocker checks, 7 additional where booted due to the "Spam-o-Matic" program finding them in the spammer database. That's 56 phony registrations in just 24 hours!
Then, all these spammers trying to get on the forums wasn't bad enough, I get dozens of attempted break-ins at the server level each week (usually a few each day):
Like I said - it's a jungle out there!
