I've heard a differny story from someone who alledgely was there.

Supposedly it came from a collge sailing team around 1971. All colleges use Vanguard 420's in their fleet. This one team (which I beleieve was in NY) would get high before practice. Eventually the team started to refer (or would that be reffer) to getting high as "420 time".

Given our team captain was alway stoned, it wouldn't surprise me. When I first heardthe term I figured it had something to do with Vanguards. I'll see if I can find the link.

I had always heard that the term came from the "California Marijuana Initiative" of 1972 (to be initiative 420) that failed to get on the ballot due to lack of sufficient signatures but I can't find anything to support that.
