The 1940 Buick!

Today the Census releases data collected in the 1940 federal census.

https://www.npr.org/2012/04/02/149703617/time-machine-12-short-trips-to-1940

NPR page above has many examples of typical USA life as the world crashed around us.

Some interesting 1940 tidbits in the article:

A July 1940 news broadcast, including William Shirer from Berlin, and Edward Murrow from London.

Artie Shaw's "Frenesi" was a big band hit.

The "interesting" 1940 Dartmouth-Cornell football game.

A new young singer named Frank something or other ...

The new Buick!

We were the "envy of the civilized world".

The Inkspots sing "Maybe".

The needs of the 1940s journalist.

Glenn Miller is "In the mood".

The just-completed Tacoma Narrows bridge collapsed.

Krazy Kat collects mouse trophies.

The Census recommends the best place to get information is "where people sleep".

Great overview.

AND, my wife was born. She was 17 when we were married. Everyone said we were too young and it wouldn't last. That was 54 years ago!
I love proving people wrong!

I found my grandparents (both sides) on the site... but it was tough. You need to know addresses, and even then it's a bit of a slog (presuming I was using it correctly). Very interesting.
