Yesterday I took a sick day from work, not because I was sick or anything. There was a strange pulling at my soul, a loud, large, panting, and wailing beast calling my name like an old memory in the night. An elegant mistress sounding her call off the mountain sides, drawing all the starry eyed believers to her side... I headed the call... And probably will again next week.

Love steam locos. One of my Grands was a steam loco engineer on the L&N out of Birmingham, AL; the other Grand was a conductor on the Southern R.R., also out of Birmingham.

It's called Steam Flue. Very contagious. My buddy and I caught it several years ago, both called in sick, took the 4449 from Seattle to Chehalis on a Boeing Employees Special.
Still have the soot splattered hat (yes, oil fired engines do splatter, especially when they use a scoop of sand at the firebox peep hole to sand the flues).
Watched the Mikado from Rainier, I think, at the Olympic Games in Wenatchee come down Steve's with a string of empty container flats for additional braking.

Watched the 4449 couple of years later at speed through Mukelteo. Hoot.

Conway, huh? Many ties to that area. That vid was nostalgia inducing.

Just walked over to the boss's office and said "Hey, about next Monday..."

That was all the further I made it before I got a hard "NO".

Oh well... The return trip won't leave Harrisburg until maybe 10am so maybe I can catch it in Seward after work. Or I can take an extended "smoke break" (I don't smoke)
