It starts...now it won't stop!

Just returned from a drive and turned the key to OFF and everything just kept on churning! I pulled the ignition switch off and with a screw driver turned it to OFF and still nothing. Turning the ignition to the START position turned the starter over. I noticed the last two drives the red IGNITION light was staying on.

On another note, possibly related, I believe my starter is going out. I turn the key and here a single click. On the third or fourth try it turns over and starts right up.

Any ideas??

Is it that the engine just keeps on running like you never turned the ignition switch off, or is it dieseling...you know, hrumph, hrumph, hrumph, hrumph??

The other problems are probably not tied to the engine that keeps running, but having the ignition light on indicates that the alternator is putting out less then battery voltage. The battery drains down, and that would cause the starter solenoid to just click, but not have enough current to crank the engine.

I had this same dumb thing happen to me after I changed out my ignition switch and wired it wrong. May want to check there.

I have seen starter relays stick closed and cause this problem. If you lift the starter lead from the relay, does it shut off?

Brent, when you figure out what is causing those symptoms, take a picture so Dale can duplicate that set up EXACTLY in his car!

Brent - just a thought. When you turn the ignition key to off, do the turn signals still operate?

Trying to see if the ignition circuit is really getting cut, or maybe your switch is "less than perfect". Might be fused wires around the switch?

I had the same problem after I pulled my dash out to reveneer it, put all the gauges back in wired correct, started her up, switch off and the TR6 kept running, the only thing I changed was I had a 8 gauge wire running from the alternator, new bosch 55 amp, to the pos terminal of the battery( was suggested so you dont overload the amp gauge) I un hooked this wire to see how much the alt was charging, hooked the wire back up and now it stops running when I turn the switch off, Still cant figure out why this stopped the problem. Try turning on the fan when the switch is off and see if the engine will stop running. Not a fix but I wouldnt pull the hi tension lead from the coil, I got a nasty shock doing that,,ouch

Thanks Tom. Hadn't checked signals but the gauges were still working including the Amp gauge which riding the line between charge and discharge. I had to use the battery disconnect when I came in last night to keep from running down the battery.

had that happen on my tr7 fhc. starter relay near the fuse panel was was the wrong configuration, a no contact was nc and kept the power to the solenoid with key off. solenoid on starter was good.

Here is what I have so far...
Found a blown fuse. Wires coming in are from the ignition, wires going out go through the starter relay?? (little black box mounted in engine compartment driver's side wheel well) and from there to the alternator. Also run thru this fuse was a set of driving lights from PO. I have temporarily taken those out. Ignition light still on but AMP meter is showing dead center when running.
