Fired up my newly rebuilt (2d time) engine tonight and it runs like a top!! New pistons, rings, rebuilt head with new guides and springs, and rebuilt rocker assembly. Oil pressure is above 50 lbs at idle at operating temp and I just have a bit of smoking, no doubt from the entire exhaust system being soaked in oil from my last rebuild job!! I have only run the car for about 10 minutes so far, so hopefully that will burn off when I actually get to drive it. I just need to light a fire under the guy rebuilding my seats now, as he has had them since Jan!!! Thanks to all of you that offered support and suggestions...

Good work, Now ENJOY!! I'm sure may of us would like to hear how the break-in progress when you get to that point. Also, I don't think the rings make the best of compression until you have at least several 100 miles on it. The smoke you mentioned will dissapear with the carbs tuned and a little milege on the new motor. I bet you DO put some pressure on your seat man. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif
 
He promises me they will be done by next Friday, the 8th. I told him I'm coming to pick them up, done or not. There are several antique car seat cover speciality shops in my area. I'm sure any of them can finish them inside a week. They are about 80 percent complete now. I replaced the spark plugs and now the little smoke I had is gone. The Bosch plugs I had in there were new, but oil soaked and I figured what's another 20 dollars for new plugs? Ha! I went with the Autolite Double Platinum; we shall see how those work.

Hi,

If the Autolite plugs don't work out, try NGKs, the plain old ordinary ones (not platinum, titanium, unobtanium, splitfire, spitfire or whatever). I swear by em in TR 4-cylinder motors.

It's not unusual for a freshly built engine to oil up the plugs a little, until the rings fully seat and seal, and everything else settles down. That might take 500 miles or more.
