Would also listen to Jean Shepherd and hockey games from Montreal with Roger Doucet singing the Canadian National Anthem (much better than ours) and Foster Hewitt from Toronto. Guess what? I still have that Telefunken downstairs in the playroom. Still works.

Good on you for still having it - My parents had a telefunken which I appropriated - not sure what happened to it likely a yard sale while I was at university. Still wish I had it
 
Childhood friend of mine's father was a shortwave guy back in the 60s and 70s. We used to listen to the Russian broadcast and even as kids would laugh at the "letters" they would read from folks that claimed they were so happy in the Soviet Union which was so modern and far ahead of the rest of the world. Why they had no crime of any sort, men and women didn't see each other as anything but fellow comrades and not as someone to chase and marry. And how millions wanted to move there each year and that's why the borders were closed. We always had a good laugh at all that even as kids.
 
Moscow was always kinda goofy. But I did get a QSL card from 'em.
 
I used to listen to Jean Shepherd every night while in high school.
The station was WOR in NY.

Back in the '60's a CKLW (Detroit) DJ did a segment called "Bearskin Rug" in late evening. WKYC (now KYW, Cleveland) DJ, Jay Lawrence, got thrown off the air for an off-color remark on a Saturday afternoon show. Heard it live and laughed in disbelief. Chicago's WCFL Chicken Man skits were good entertainment as well. Back when AM radio was worth listening to.
