Hi folks,

I was cleaning up some SU's when I came across this. The corrosion on the top of the shaft - is this a problem?

Cheers!

Clean it up with some OOOO steel wool. The critical measurement is between the piston seal and the 'dome'.
Rut

Yes it's shot send it and the rest of it and manifold to me for recycling
Your good as Rut already said clean it up your good does not need to be all pretty shiny so no sense in over doing it.
Make it Sing!

Do not do any cleaning on the piston surface that run's inside the dome. As Rut mentioned that fit is critical.

Kurt.

When I do projects like this I wash everything in my utility sink with something like Purple Power after I use steel wool. You could even use something like 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper...the point is you want to use the least abrasive product to get the job done. I always clean everything with spray carb cleaner before assembly as well.
Rut

most importantly you want to test your work by doing a piston drop time.

You should though after cleaning the shaft keep an eye on the damper oil level once back in service. With that clearance perhaps a bit wider between the and the dashpot tube it runs in, could see a need to top up more often.

Adrian, it's good to see you post again. I hope all is well.

Many, many thanks to all who posted (and the kind words) - all good advice,
I'll finish up cleaning these carbs, knowing they are good to go.
Cheers!

Mike,
Thanks for that tidbit. I've a TR3 that needs constant top up. I've oftenwondered why. Need to investigate.
