The TR4 i'm hoping to aquire has this Luggage rack on it.

Is that original or has someone fitted it later on?
 
That plates been changed, Don't know if that matters. The boot has a bulge into it and the plates is flat

My vote is aftermarket, but I am sure that UK options and US options differed so check with the TR Register website or the Bill Piggot books or one of the more learned BCFers will chime in.

The US "factory/dealer" rack attacked at the boot lid hinges and the license plate attachment points.

I was given to understand luggage racks were only fitted at the dealerships or by owners after purchase.
 
The glass on the surry top looks intact but the steering wheel is on the wrong side. :jester:
 
The "factory" one that I'm familiar with would be the one that Jeremy described which mounts at the trunk hinges and the US license plate mounting holes. I'm pretty sure this was made by Amco for the US markets.

Not sure what they would have had in the UK but I'm guessing it would have been different.

I see that car looks like mine did originally with lots of bondo over the rear fender seams. What does a car in that condition sell for in the UK?

Someone got happy with bondo filler and covered/removed the fender seams. Better check the body out very closely. Does look decent, especially with the surrey top.

The old MGB I had a rack kinda like that. It was nice considering the the low trunk space. I think it was original.
 
You guys have good eyes. The easiest spot to check on the seams will be in the boot area. My car had that done, but I had documentation that the seams were brought down to bare metal before filling and painting. It is not ideal because of body flexing, but the car was so nice and I figured I would address it during the "next" restoration. Don't let that deter you if you are convinced that you are not dealing with a lot of rust underneath. If you are planning on restoring the car, then you are ready to go.

Oh boy, another 4A will be getting back on the road!
 
Thanks for the responses guys, I am unsure about the seams and the Luggage rack and the rust. But i'm sure the steering wheel is on the right side :jester:
I really need to get the bonnet open though, so i can see the state of the engine bay.
 
250/5 reverse lights are round and mounted under the tail lamps. Those are definitely add-ons to the boot lid.

Late, late 4As had horizontal bars with the black paint, which carried over into the 250/5 range.

This particular 4A definitely has been "improved" over the years.

I've never seen a TR4A with a blacked-out grille (upper edge of each horizontal bar painted black) like the TR250/TR5 (they also removed the upper half-circle for the crank start)?

The latest picture of a TR4A that I could find on the TR Registry was CTC76828 which shows the same grille as my 2 TR4A's.

Hi There carbrioman,

I had a `66TR4A not that long ago (Wish I still did).

I had an "Orig" luggage rack on it. The "Front" of the rack mounts onto the Hinges (No holes drilled) & The "Rear" of the rack curves down onto the License Plate mounting holes (No holes drilled).

This one appears to be a "Home Made" job to me.

Some of the long-time 4A guys on "another list" told me that and my Dad parted out a 4A in 1976 that had that type of grille, too. You fall into the long-time category, too, right?

Eh, I won't fight you on that one.

Cabrioman's car has the extruded grille like ours so he is good.

LOL, only long time from my own TR4A's which I've owned for 31 (senior year high school) and 24 years respectively and lots of British car shows in the 80's and early 90's.

Hey I see you are located in Maryland, do they still have the British car show in Bowie Maryland? I think that was our favorite with a great turn out of cars, vendors (new and used) and location.

Cabrioman, I believe the luggage rack is an aftermarket add-on, of a type commonly found in England. I see these frequently on EBay Motors U.K.
