Is this diagnostic test legit?

Starting a continuation the thrust washer thread so
that a clean look is given to it. I read up on thrust
washer end float diagnostics. Here is what I tried with
my results. Tell me if this is a legit test, please.

1. Car in neutral, engine off. I vigorously levered the
fan pully wheel backwards with a large pickle fork.

2. A bright light on the timing arrow, my face maybe 12 inches away.

3. Wendy slowly pushed the clutch pedal to the floor as I
watched the pulley top edge and timing arrow point.

4. The pulley moved forward almost so little I could barely
detect it with my eyes.

5. I placed a steel straight edge on the pulley face top
edge and measured the gap between the straight edge and
the timing arrow point with my valve adjustment feeler
strips.

6. The fan pully appears to have moved forward .005 feeler
strip.

Is this a valid test for whether or not I have a thrust washer issue that needs to be replaced?

Thanks all,

dale

Well, Dale, it's a pretty good rough check. At least you know they are both still in there. If you have a major concern, procure a dial indicator setup and get some exact numbers.
Jeff

Thanks Jeff!

Tomster, you betcha I'm looking for remnants of DPO Pedro!!

I have two years of my time and well over $30k in parts,
tools, etc and paid for mechanic labor due to the poor
condition of this car that was scammed upon my wife.

My car is finally functional and if DPO Pedro sold me a car
with shot thrust washers I want to know about it NOW! Not
when the engine eats itself because of a few $$ washers I
failed to install.

Yes, I am certainly looking for trouble---
before it happens.

Tinster,

It is nice that you now have the luxury of looking for potential trouble areas, instead of having a long list of them in your face. Sounds like a contented LBC owner is emerging. Keep up the good work and thanks for the rebuild articles you have posted.

Tomster,

Yes, I know your post was in jest.

Everyone have a great holidays.

Phil

Dale, you are doing the right thing. And like Jeff said it is a good rough check.

Somewhere I read a comment about purchasing an inexpensive indicator. It is also a good idea. One that measures to .001" is plenty good and easier to read because of the graduations. It would be virtually impossible to measure closer anyway because of all the many variables involved. And to make sure you get good measurements find a machinist that will take a few minutes to show you how to use it. Wrong measurements are worse than none at all.

IMO, yes it's a valid test; and no, you don't have a problem.

Congratulations !

Re:Is this diagnostic test legit?

I always ask that same question of my urologist every time he has me bent over and I hear that loud POP as he puts on his latex glove to test my prostate gland. Ouch.

*snork!*

Dale: ~IF~ you have it "bottomed" well-and-truly (and it sounds as if you have), and ~if~ you accurately measured the throw (ibid) as 0.005", KEEP DRIVING IT!!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbsup.gif

And a new definition of "indefinitely"! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

EDIT: Oh, we are sooo gonna hear about this, my friend. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif

Boys.
The boss is gonna have to be in the Christmas spirit, or your 'puter privileges may be hindered.
Actually, this gave me a great laugh after a tough day of talking to people about why their Hondas aren't perfect.
Thanks

Dale
when I tried to measure the end float I could not get the dial indicator any where in the engine bay up front to get a good reading, so I pulled the oil pan off and checked it that way and at that point I just put the new thrust washers in, once the oil pan is off its easy, STD washers should bring it back to tolerence. I bought STD and +005 but only used the STd ones

Now that's funny. The urologist telling the dentist
to open wide.
