is this a question af following too close and poor weather conditions

Maybe in small part at the beginning, but...

I was involved in one of these in Minnesota years ago...smaller, but same cause. When the people at the front of the herd suddenly lose sight of the cars ahead and the road around them they do the logical thing...they slow down. The folks coming up from the rear don't recognize the loss of visibility ahead and they can't see the slowing traffic so they just drive headlong into the growing mess. If the road is slippery, they can't steer and the can't stop, so even if they realize what's happening in front of them they're going way too fast to avoid it.

Probably... I saw the story on the news as well, was it during rush hour? I imagine the high volumes of traffic have an impact, even if just one vehicle loses control... I'm just glad there were no serious injuries...

And don't forget on the 400 almost any time of day 100 cars is at most 2 minutes worth.

some days it seems like a lot more than 100 JP, esp sunday night in the summer

After I posted, thought, yes, more like 30 seconds sometimes

How about Friday afternoon during the summer months... About ten years ago I work in Barrie, in the industrial park on the south end, Monday to Thursday I'd take the 400 all of three exits to drive home in the afternoon, on Fridays in the summer? Forget about it, a log jam of traffic and hardly even moving, I would always take the side roads adjacent to the main highway to get home... I can't even imagine how long it would take people to get to cottage country, I'd be stressed just driving there... :witless:
