Take it to a check cashing service, pay their 5% fee
and take yer cash home. If the check guys won't cash it?
You know it's bogus.

Got another 1 on Thursday. This one was from a Wachovia bank from Norfolk. The fed Ex was addressed to me but the check was made out to somebody else.
Maybe an old Pyramid is paying off finally.
 
Take it to a bank branch that it is drawn on they can check the account # in a heartbeat and see if there is sufficient funds to cash it or even if the account exists. Seems kinda strange if no one is asking you to do a partial refund or pay for some unforseen, unrecieved item with the money.
Most checks like that have a time limit on cashing if you hang on to it too long without some sort of transaction the check will go null and void. If it really is someone paying money owed to you, you could stand to loose. I myself deffinalely would not dispurse the money from this check right away. Just in case you have to refund it or forfit it for investigative purposes.
Yes I would be HIGHLY suspicious! And take every precaution necessary as not to get burned.

Exactly. I'm 100% sure it will be bogus.

Look, no one is going to send you a pile of money for nothing, with no legible return address. Whatever is going on, it's almost certain to be a scam. They are counting on you to assume it's legit, then the scam, whatever it is, will proceed from there.

I say, call in the feds.
 
Update guys. Who ever is doing this has got me big now. He has stolen 1 of my credit card number
and has opened a Fed-Ex account (now closed) and sent envelopes,probably with said checks ,all over the country.
I got a call from someone in MA who got one for $3000 to pay for a $400 Craiglist item. Seen that scam before. I think the first check I got was by mistake and he blew town when he realized that he sent me one. I think the second check was a Fed Ex return to me for non address and since i was the account name it came back to me.So today I closed all my credit cards,contacted all my banks. Downloaded my this years free credit reports from the big 3 and talk to the Fed Ex fraud department. Yesterday i sent a letter to my AG and let them know what was going on. I have still to put fraud notices on my credit report but that is next.
I called Paypal and let them know that I think my # was stolen from them as I only use it basically for that. They said it is impossible. Pretty big headed if you ask me. They told me NO ONE has ever had a # stolen from them.
So your up to date.
 
If it's too good to be true...you can count that it is just that!! What a pain for you to go through all that, Don! I'm just glad that you caught it BEFORE it got real nasty on you!!! :thumbsup: To quote a corrupt old politician...(speaker of the house McCormick)..."there's nothing for nothing"!!

As I said before, call your local FBI office. If anyone can track this guy, they can. At least you'll get their viewpoint on the problem.
 
I got one of those bogus checks for about $5000, through my business and called the FBI. They sent me to the Secret Service. Neither agency was interested in any follow up because it was less than $50,000 and I never actually incurred any loss. Since it was an international transaction I even went as far as contacting Interpol who declined also. The bank it was drawn on said they got a few of them a day. No big deal they said to just toss it.

Same thing happened to me but it was employee who pulled a credit card
fraud on me. I lost a full $10,000.
No law enforcement agency was interested.

The police would have to respond if you made a criminal complaint. That might not get your money back but it tends to get the attention of the criminal and they might pay you back to get out of going to jail.

Certainly sends a very clear message. If you try to scam anyone there is no penalty so why not try it. Can you imagine if was the same for bank robbing? "He asked for less than $50,000 so we won't pursue it."
